I have posted this question on other forums, with no luck on getting answers. Was hoping someone here could help me out. The reason I ask is because I have been reading and researching which tires and wheels I would like to purchase to upgrade from my stock 20" wheels and 275/55/20 Pirelli's. Today I was told be 2 people at RimzOne that a 17" wheel would not fit on my 2009 FX4. I wouldn't mind going with an 18" wheel, except they are more expensive tires. I am going to go with the NITTO Terra Grappler 295/70/17 or 18. One is a 33.3 inch tire and other is 34.3. I would actually prefer the larger one, except price difference.

Well that is strange because I have STOCK 17's on my 09. The stock tire combo on my XLT 4x4 screw is a 265/70/17. When I upgrade wheels and tires I am sticking to a 17.

 

Welcome to the forum! I don't understand why they wouldn't fit, like pineapple2468 said all 2009 XL trucks, like mine, come stock with 17's. The only thing I can think of is the tire pressure monitoring system, but that shouldn't matter.

 

I believe that there could be an issue with an older (i.e. - 2004-2008 F-150 17" wheel) being used. I think that the 2009-up have a slightly larger caliper assembly, therefore the opening for the wheel to go over that is slightly bigger for 2009-up vs. 2004-2008 when talking about 17" wheels. I think this issue was mentioned on this forum, but I can't seem to find it in a search right now.

Best bet, stick to a 17" wheel that is meant for 2009-up and you should be fine.

 

Not true. I am running 2004 17" XLT wheels for my winter tires. There are some that have problems with some 18" not clearing the calipers properly, but not because of diameter. More because of thickness of the wheel spokes.

I have 17" wheels on mine currently for the winter. They fit, but the rear caliper was too close to allow for stacking stick on wheel weights double high on the inside of the rim.:o

I may put my wheels/tires up for sale in a few weeks when I switch back to my 20's.

Here is a shot of my truck on the 17's and some 315/70/R17 Mickey Thompson MTZ's on them.

 

If those 17" wheels do not fit, this does not apply to all 17" wheels because the 09 FX4 came with standard 17" off-road wheels originally.

 

And also, even the 2010's have 17" as standard on some models. Even though the brakes were enlarged again.

 

I spoke to a guy at "Trick Trucks" today and he provided me with a bit more information on this matter. He said that the 17" depending on brand/model of 17" wheel, will have an issue fitting in most cases. He said that this is only so on the FX4 model of the F150 because the caliper assembly is larger on the FX4 than it is on the others. He "highly" recommended that if I switch out my stock 20"s, that I go with the 18".

He also mentioned that I should stay in the +12mm to +18mm offset because with anything less than that, the F150's are know to rattle/shake/vibrate due to too much offset and wheel sticking out too far. This was the first I had heard about this issue.

 

There is no difference in the brake calipers between the XL, XLT, FX4, Lariat, or Platinum models. All the same. There may be a problem with some rims fitting, due to back space of the wheel, but not because it is the FX4 model.

 

Not sure why 3 places now have told me the same thing if there wasn't actually a difference at all. I dont know, i'll just go with the 18" to avoid any possible issues I guess.

 

Because they don't have a clue. Go out to someplace like Tasca parts and look up a caliper. The only differences are left/right, front/rear. No difference in model.

 

Even the Raptors come with 17s.

 

Yep. The biggest problem that you will have with the wheels is the design of the wheel, no matter what size it is, 17, 18, or 20. If you look at the brakes, you will see the calipers stick out a go way beyond the wheel mounting surface of the rotor. That means the back of the wheel must be dished somewhat between the mounting surface and the outside of the rim. Otherwise the caliper will hit the wheel before it is flush with the mounting surface. If you read the thread I posted a link to, you will find that the wheels that would not work between the 05 and 09 were 18" wheels. 17's fit fine.

 

I wonder if those would fit my truck if I got a 1.5" front lift?
