Current Sirius & XM Radios Deemed useless by next year!

I was listeneing to the news yesterday, & with the pending merger between Sirius & XM to be complete by next year, current radios used will be useless, due to a new channel format! That's right! Do not buy any new radios that are currently in use or on store shelves, you will just be wastin your hard earned money! The price will also be going up, & will be comperable to the Al-La Carte pricing menu for you cable TV service! I hope that this will help people save money! Notice that both companies right now do not mention this! Big Monopolies are not looking out for us consumers!......

That sucks because in the past they said that if Sirius and XM merged that the old recievers would still work.
This is what I feared would happen if they merged. There is no longer any competition, so they can jack the price up as high as they want.
Im glad I let my Sirius subscription expire.

You really do not have any idea what you are talking about. The a la carte options will also be cheaper than the current option of having to get all of the channels.

http://investor.sirius.com/ReleaseDe...cat=&newsroom=

A La Carte -- 50 Channels ($6.99) -- Currently the only standard package offered by either company is $12.95 a month. Under this new option, for only $6.99 per month -- a savings of 46 percent -- consumers will be able to choose either 50 SIRIUS channels from approximately 100 SIRIUS channels or 50 XM channels from approximately 100 XM channels. Additional channels can be added for 25 cents each, with premium packages priced at additional cost. However, no one choosing this option will pay more than $12.95 a month.

A La Carte -- 100 Channels ($14.99) -- Consumers may also choose an a la carte offering of 100 channels each. SIRIUS customers will be able to choose from some of the best of XM's programming and XM customers will be able to choose from some of the best of SIRIUS' programming. Today this programming would require two monthly subscriptions, totaling $25.90. The new 100 channel a la carte option represents a savings of 42 percent.

Best of Both Packages Will Be Available on Existing Radios

You're a tool!

Do some homework first (or, at least, quit listening to and repeating whatever is passing itself off as "news").

#1. The merger is NOT yet approved by the FCC but has made it past DOJ. However, it's quite likely it will be but we don't know what obstacles Martin will impose.

#2 Assuming it does pass, it will take a year or three for totally inter-operable sets to hit the market. Rock & Roll and the dog chasing its tail constellation will both be in orbit and in use for next decade. Given the size of the installed receiver base and the lead time to redo OEM supply channels, your statement, on its face, is quite ludicrous and is counter to everyhting that has been published.

Eventually, receivers will hit the market that can take advantage of the different platforms or the resulting company (Sirius) will modify its encoding so both legacy receiver chipsets can encode the datastream from either source.

Steve

hmm....
we just merged the only 2 satellite radio companies, and now are going to make the millions of subscribers buy new radios tomorrow....
any ceo would see this as either corporate suicide or a lawsuit waiting to happen from the big automakers that are promoting/selling radios with xm/sirius installed.
it will be years before anyone is faced with replacing radios. no way they will **** off the subscriber base that way..

Here is a quote from the link: "From day one, SIRIUS and XM have promised that no subscriber will pay more after the merger for a service similar to what they enjoy today and that no existing radio will be made obsolete by the merger."

Your existing radio will still work. If you want to be able to listen to XM if you have Sirius you will need to upgrade.

gocats is correct. If you have a Sirius radio, you will at minimum be able to listen to Sirius plus a few "select XM" stations and vice-versa. They haven't announced what XM stations will be available (I'm thinking they're not the top ones).

Alas, I was hoping to be able to listen to major league baseball. XM will still be the only carrier of that, and Sirius for NFL. Argh.
