XM Receiver Mounting

I just got an Audiovox Xpress XM receiver for Christmas. In the instruction manual it says that it is strongly recommended that the unit is kept out of direct sunlight or out of the direction of a heat source. But in many diagrams and such, units are mounted to the top of the dash or on a vent. Good mounting positions appear limited, so what are the possible bad things that would happen if it was mounted to the top of the dash? Should I be concerned with the recommendation?

I'll take an educated guess at this. Since it looks like you live in NJ, I wouldn't worry about mounting it on the dash. I've had my XM mounted in direct sunlight down here in 100+ degree weather for the past year and nothing has happened yet. If you do mount it on the dash...it might not be a bad idea to have a small towel or rag to throw over it if its going to be sitting in the sun for 8+ hours. I have a Myfi and usually just throw it on the seat if its going to be too hot.

I was thinking of keeping a hat in the truck for a dual purpose heat protector and anti-theft device. I'm starting to really like the area where I mounted the unit. I'll take a picture when I get a chance. It's has great readability while I'm driving. And the remote control allows for more comfortable driving now that I don't have to lean closer to the radio to keep my finger on the radio for the station flip. Of course I now have to flip less since I got the XM. No commercials on the music stations. Gotta love it. I just need to reroute the wires for a better look. And even without the PIE this unit sounds very, very good through the FM transmitter. I may hold off on the PIE.

Here's a quick shot of where I mounted my XM. Great position for reading while driving.

Looks good, I like the location.

I have an unrelated question for you Guigster, I was checking out your photos and notice you have a Linex liner, where in Jersey did you get that done?
