Information on antenna mounting

I'm installing XM in both my '05 Ford vehicles and wanted to pass along a couple of "tips" an installer told me yesterday. When I asked him if I'd be OK installing the antenna inside the car - in the dash area - he said with XM yes with Sirius no - that for some reason Sirius needed to be on the outside to work best.....he also said that any (XM or Sirius) antenna needed to be placed in a "line of sight" area or it wouldn't work properly.....does this sound right to those of you who have installed your antenna under the cowl area or under plastic, etc?

I am my XM under the dash and it works fine. I do have occational drop-outs when under trees but not much. It would work better on the roof for sure but I am happy with where it is - nice and easy run.

When i first installed my Sirius, I placed the antenna on the dash. It worked ok for the first few days, but as I started to drive to more places the signal started to cut out more and more. I have moved the antenna onto the front of the roof and it is much much better. I only lose signal going under large overpasses, or under large trees.

I routed the antenna through a grommet on the firewall, then up the "A" pillar, then under the upper windshield moulding. It looks pretty decent. The upper moulding on my 02 screw is soft rubber so it was a fifteen minute install.

The plug and play using the FM modulator sucks. When I drive to the Bay area, I sometimes have to change output channels.

Hope this helps!

Regards!

Thanks guys.....that's what I was thinking - I'll mount it inside the car for now (rear package shelf on my '05 GT) and front dash near the middle of the windshield on my F-150 then see how the reception is over a couple of weeks....if there are too many "drops" then I'l relocate...probably would run the truck through the 3rd brake light housing and under the headliner...by the way I did get my XM running (only via FM mod for now - until the PIE adapter arrives) and it is GREAT!! Sounds very good via FM mod - can't wait to get it hard wired via the "AUX" button.
