Lighter socket

Is there any reason not to use the lighter socket to power my MyFy? It is more convienient to my MyFy mounting.

Instead of what? Lighter sock it fine. I don't know aobut 04+, but 97-03 was battery, not switched. Forgetting to turn off the device powered by the lighter could drain your battery.

I think most people hardwire for appearance reasons. I have the MyFi too and I like having it turn on and off with the radio. It can be spliced into the radio power so that it delays until the doors are opened.

Personal choice, but like the previous poster said, you'll need to remember to turn it off if you use an unswitched power source.

I spliced in a secondary socket behind the dash for the power source for my MyFi... it's tied into the socket that is in front of the passenger...

Like 05-KR mentioned though, always make sure to turn it off! I learned that the hard way about two months ago when I was gone on business for 10 days.

My sportster has a feature where you can make it auto shut off after an hour (or other chosen time) of inactivity. I imagine most if not all of the pnp units would have a feature similar to this. It's a lifesaver if you forget to switch the plugged in unit off with the car.

You are right! I checked the user guide and the MyFi unit does have an auto-off feature. Hey RP and CruisinKen - this will prevent those dead battery issues.

Thanks for pointing this out LexTalons!

I wired in extra 12V-outlets on my dash for my 2 cell phones, iPod and occassional portable GPS unit.

You can see more pictures in my album, Interiors section.
