xm vs. sirius
xm vs. sirius
Ok, I've never researched it, but whats better, in your opinion?
XM is $10 a month.
Sirius is $13 a month or $500 Lifetime of the reciever you activate.
Do they carry the same channels? Who has the better features? Service and Tech Support? What's the best bang for your buck receiver? Mounting? any issues?
I know I'm missing some things, but it's at least a start.
Thanks, Ken.

I have Sirius and really like. I have never heard XM but i have heard people complaining about it. When I few friends rented a chevy for the weekend to come to my wedding the car had XM and they complained about it all weekend long. My other friends boss has XM and complains all the time.
As for Sirius.. you will of course have howard stern soon.... but I believe Sirius has more stations then XM as well. There are dead spots with Sirius just like XM though.... its receiving from a satellite so if you dont have a direct line of site its not going to work whatever your using....... so its a toss up i think. I got Sirius cause my friend has it and really liked it. I have been happy so far.... I just cant stand the FM modulator setup im using..... I lose my sirius half way to work every morning because of local stations broadcasting on 88.1 88.3 88.5 and 88.7..... I really wanted to do a direct input but i cant (Thanks ford!!!!!!!).... so I cant wait to dicth my factory 6 disc and get my kenwood 7015 installed!!!!!!!!

This is kind of like the "which oil to use" or "F150 vs Titan" threads...everybody has their own PERSONAL preferance.
I for one have 3 cars with XM in them and LOVE it. I have never had Sirius but I have "heard bad things about it". I have XM because I have and like Pioneer HUs...had I had a HU that supports Sirius I would have Sirius. It kind of like comparing Dishnetwork with Direct TV....both are basicaly the same, both have good points and bad. I would however stay away from the $500 for the life of the reciever thing....chances are which ever reciever you go with will be WAY OUTDATED by the time you would be a head using that plan.

I've got the inverse experience. I have had XM for over a year and love it. The people I know with Sirius do nothing, but complain about it.
It may all be a mood point as they are both in talks with the SEC about merging.

I have XM - I installed the XM Commander in the ashtray to keep it clean.
The XM has worked very well for me - but only had it for a few months.
I think they are both very similar when it comes to functionality - but from what I can gather from people that have both - Sirius does have better programming - BUT it all depends on your tastes.
Supposedly Sirius is better for Rap
XM is better for Country
Sirius has NFL (sweet) and Howard Stern (dont care)
XM has MLB (dont care) and Supercross (awesome)
So it really comes down to what you like to listen to.
XM is much larger in terms of listeners - but I dont think any of them are going away any time soon - the real excitement will be when one of them is bought out by some large media company - then we will see some differences.
Thats just my overpriced 2 cents.

as mentioned before, a merger is possible. Sirius is still losing tons of money every day. Howard stern will be another year or two before he ever shows up on sirius, if they're still in business by then.
XM has Opie & Anthony, which is IMHO a MUCH better show than stern is. If you've never listened to them, you really should. XM has finally realized they're losing customers do to lack of sports coverage, and now the ball is rolling to get the big stuff. Baseball has already started, and soon the bidding wars will start (if the companies don't merge). With XM having many more customers and earning a good profit, compared to the constant money loss of sirius, I think xm will eventually bury them.
Remember back in the old days of digital satelite TV? we had the first system that ever came out (as we still couldn't get cable at the time). There were actually two companies broadcasting on the satellite--Direct TV and USSB. DirectTv broadcast 'normal' cable channels, USSB broadcast all the HBO's, Showtimes, Etc. It was only a matter of time until USSB died and DirectTv started carrying everything.
XM has been bigger and much more popular from the get go, and bigger companies will usually win. That's why I went with xm. I was one of the first few thousand customers to sign up when it first came out. Sirius wasn't even broadcasting yet. It's all I've ever known, but I love it to death. I'd like to have football games, but I think it's only a matter of time.

I think XM has dropped the ball on the sports coverage. They will lose NASCAR to Sirius in 2007 and probably a few subscribers too, me included. Of course that all depends on IF Sirius is still in business. Kind of makes you wonder were all of their money is coming from.
I have SIRIUS and am very happy. Don't get sidelined by the slight difference in price. Yes, XM is a few bucks cheaper for the base package but when you start adding on the 'premium' channels like Opie & Anthony and online streaming you end up paying more than with SIRIUS. SIRIUS is one price, all inclusive, including...
1. NFL
2. Howard Stern (2006)
3. NASCAR (2007)
4. online streaming
If you are not sure, they both offer free trials for their online streaming. listen to both and see which one you like.
