Question check engine light

my check engine light came on yesterday afternoon. I ran the truck about 3 different times afterwards, and it finally went off this morning.

The owners manual tells very little about it. What is the usual culprit. Is it usually an emissions thing-needs tune up, filter change?

I just bought this truck 2 months ago, so i'm not too knowledgeable about its past. It's a '97 5.4L with 31,000 miles.

Since the light went off, i'm gonna hold off going to the local dealer. What's your take on this, any good advice?

Sounds like an oxygen sensor to me but, it could be any number of things... just watch it close and monitor the truck like a hawk. If something doesn't seem quite kosher, go get er' checked out. Good luck.

Welcome!! The CE light stores a code based on the indicated problem. You need to have these codes scanned to eliminate guesswork. People with scanners=dealerships, garages, and parts stores. A member posted last week that Auto Zone even scanned his codes for him.
