Hi Norm - Did you look at or drive the Expolorer? My wife was talking about a H3 Hummer & I got her talked into Explorer but she stopped in at the dealership for a look & didnt even test drive it. She came home & said she couldnt stand the way the door handles were, apparently the handle to pull the door closed is very awkward. Any thoughts?

speed control do it yourself

Well I've found a truck to replace my '98 XLT 4x4 model that went up in smoke, and even though I ran the VIN and it didn't come back with an active recall, I'm concerned. Is the database that Ford keeps current? How do they track that the warranty work was done? I saw a picture of the cruise switch (from this site) and it looks like a pretty straight forward job to disconnect it. Does unplugging the harness from the switch remove the threat of fire?

Harness

Had the recall fix done, and looked to see what they did in 5 minutes, and it looks like a fusible link added on to the plug. He zip tied it to the cruise cable as it is 8-10 inches long.
Oh well, no fire now they say.

Yes, if you unpluged the switch mounted toward the front of the master cylinder. As I recall, it is orange. That switch needs to be replaced and or the wiring needs to be changed to include a fuse. I am sure you realize that while unplugged, you will not have cruise control.

Hello Hipster - can you do me a favor & post the part number for the fused cable on the forum here? Id like to be able to order one from Ford.
Thanks for your time in advance

Never tested the Explorer. Barely even saw it. I've always been an F-man. I had to trade in my F-250 (1981)( and got the "return customer" discount) on the new F-150. Downsized because I don't go bush-bashin' any more and I can easily get into the wood lot without a winch.

hey minimustangs......

.......your truck was part of the original recall if I remember correctly. The 1st recall was for 2000 F150's & the 2001 SC's & some Expeditions as well so you should be covered(?). I'd run the VIN for it on the NHTSA website & see if it's included then make sure your insurance agent is alerted.
Sorry to hear you lost your truck but at least nobody got hurt. Last I'd read, 5 people died from these fires & that's why the recall was finally expanded for all trucks from 97 - 02. Good luck with this.

Im not really thrilled about buying it just so she can take her customers through the backwoods & scratch it all up like our 2003 Screw but what can I say, I'll have to look at this door pull thing myself - I cant imagine its as bad a design as she stated! Good news is I get to keep the Screw for my exclusive use which will be nice as a lot of roads around here arent practical to drive my Mustang on.

Hello Blaine! - Thanks, so this is the one they install if your old switch is good (I.E. not leaking), in other word you still have the orange colored switch now with a fused harness?
Thanks Again

Little Tow, that is right. This is the fused harness they install if your old switch(orange) is used.

Thanks Blaine, I went ahead & ordered one this AM online from SouthWest Ford for $6.09. Even though my 03 isnt "on the recall" it was built in 02 thus has no fuse in that circuit (at least not of the correct size). I have the kit w/the newer black switch but the harness with that still has no fuse. This harness is the best fix unless you have a leaking switch. I'll sleep better knowing that if there is a short the fuse SHOULD stop any fire from occuring.
Thanks Again All!

Got the harness yesterday - interesting theres a tag on the harness that states if the fuse blows the harness must be replaced with part #9F924 which is the new switch & harness adapter that doesnt have a fuse! Does anyone have or can take a pic of what the fused harness looks like installed? Its not a big deal to install but Id like to see exactly where the Ford techs tiewraped it so it looks "factory".
Thanks Again All

Little Tow, all they did with mine is plug in both ends, and then zip-tied the whole harness onto the Cruise Cable that runs nearby.
