Will I kill my truck doing burnouts?
So I've been dying to do a burnout in my '07 FX2, but will I hurt it?
5.4, automatic. I just want to do it a couple times for fun, not concerned about my back tires. I just don't want to damage something expensive, ie the tranny or diff |
wow....really??? grow up??
|
you gotta pay to play
|
You help it get a little stronger each time you do a burnout.
|
oh come on, nobody has a little kid inside them? i could just go sit on my porch in a rocking chair yelling at kids to get off my lawn if that's what's cool nowadays.
i'm not asking for sarcasm, i'm just asking if a stock tranny can handle it or if it's just going to damage it with a few seconds of burnouts once or twice. |
I do burn outs in my 06 and so far no problems, my trans is stock I just have a custom tune.

I just don't want to damage something expensive, ie the tranny or diff if you are going to put in gear and stomp it then probably not (unless you twist off a u-joint and take out the fuel tank or something if you are going to powerbrake it, then there's a chance you could warp your rear rotors now I'm not trying to scare you as it's your truck, sure you might break something but thats what you risk anyway each and everytime you start it up |

go to about 30 seconds, Just a time or two isnt going to hurt it |
chances are youll be fine but theres always a chance something can go wrong
|
Trucks aren't made to burn out. They were built to go slow, not handle, and get out preformed by every other vehicle on the road.
Please never do a burnout in a truck. EVER! |
always a chance something could break but unlikely in my book. I would think its still hard on it though. I just prefer not to do it myself but hey its your truck

They only thing I would worry about is not to overheat the transmission other than that I would not worry. Built Ford tough as the saying goes m2c
|
Buy a Lightning...then roast 'em all you want.
Seriously...use the powerbrake method, not the neutral drop method. Jim |

I wish my truck could burn the tires. Damn 4.2 auto.
|
If you just want to see the smoke and hear your motor wind up tight, you can mix some bleach and water for a really slick solution to get rid of the traction and let her go. Tires break loose very easily and there is no need to power break once they are spinning. This method lessons the drive line shock and keep you from having to really get rough on the transmission and u-joints.

no need to be a jerk...it's just a question. isn't that what this site is for??? :fyi: |
After 180,000 miles of straight hell my 8.8" bit the dust. It has made 200+ passes down the drag strip and easily a couple hundred miles of burnouts. At some point you'll pull the cover and find the spiders and clutches destroyed but burn 'em off until then.
|
Grass, dirt and mud, even sand- hours of burn outs and you should be fine lol, I do and my trucks still running great as far as Im concerned
|
I dont think so

You should be fine. Just leave the tranny in first. You could damage the clutch packs in your differential, but it would more than likely take quite a few burnouts to do that. I can't even do a burnout in my truck. That's what the stang is for :D

does the 1st gear selection on the auto give more torque?
|
Putting it into first gear apply a clutch band that keeps the clutch pack from slipping. It will be better for the equipment.
That burnout i posted was in drive. I have done them clear through 3rd gear before with out any issues. But I would never recommend it to anybody. It is hard on equipment for sure. |
Man I'd do burnouts everyday if my tires didn't cost $300 a piece

I guess I'll revive this old thread with my 2 cents. I also have an 07 FX2 5.4. I put a supercharger on it, and as of now the rest of the drive train is stock. I gotta say I'm not easy on the gas pedal. I do burnouts all the time and everything is fine. Besides, if something breaks that's just God's way of telling you it's time to upgrade to performance parts!!! :beers:

If you're going to do burnouts on a regular basis, install a line-lock. It will be easier on the transmission, rear end, driveshaft and u-joints.
|
Of course burnouts are not "healthy" for your truck. Engine or tires. But if you can do something like this it's totally worth it :D
|
Nope!

Doing a burnout OBVIOUSLY won't harm the transmission unless you do a neutral drop or power brake it until parts blow through the oil pan. |

Seriously...use the powerbrake method, not the neutral drop method. Jim Even a bullet proof Torqueflite 727 would probably be damaged doing that!!!!! I did a neutral drop in a 1976 Plymouth Fury and that was it! |
