heater blows hot then cold

Hey everbody,
A buddy of mine has a late 80's ranger. I know it still has the cable actuated heater controls.
does anyone have an idea why it would blow hot for awhile and then blow cold?
he has changed the thermostat, and it is in the right way, I verified this. He has back flushed the system twice, it is full of coolant, or appears to be. My advice was to let the truck go through several driving cycles with the heater on and check the fluid every morning to make SURE that it wasnt low. but the engine is not getting hot at all. what are your thoughts?

i had a car that done that once and it was just low on coolant. when it was cold it looked full but when the thermostat opened and let the coolant flow it would blow cold air. you say he has backflushed the system but did he backflush the heater core? alot of people dont think about doing that it could be pluged.
