Air Pump

I was reading a thread a while back about the air pump, but I am still undecided. Is it worth it if I removed the pump since it is not hooked up to my cats? Is there any power that can be gained from removing it? Also if I do remove it, can I simply get a shorter belt, or will I have to get some custom made tension pulley bracket?

You can find another belt...they come in all shapes and sizes, just get some string or yarn and run it around all the pulley's and then tie it and go to the Auto Parts store and start comparing.

My air pump was gone when I bought my truck, but it wouldnt pass inspection so I had to put one on it. (we just have a visual inspection where I live) I could tell absolutely no difference in power with it on or off. Although it does look at little cleaner under the hood with all the stuff gone.
If you do decide to take it off I would keep it. You might want to put it back on when you sell the truck.

If you yard out all that pump crap you'll have to plug your exhaust to. Not a big deal.

There is a mustang idler pulley if you remove your mustang pump, i have one, but the pulley is a different diameter than the truck pump.
So a short belt seems like the best way. I'd prefere a cleaner looking engine dept. .02

Why would I have to plug my exhaust? The pump is connected ot anything right now, it just pumps air under the truck LOL

I forgot about your new stuff under there, uh umm never mind

Ya! Dammmit! Throw that pump out...after you measure for a new belt Measure with the string method while your tensioner is sprung with your current belt, just skip the pump pulley when running your string around.

A good friend of mine did this with his mustang to eliminate his pump, He bought 3 belts at Napa, returned 2

Hey guys, this is my first post here! Anyway, i just did this to my truck after searching through some old posts here. I left my pump on until I had a shop build a new Y pipe without a pre cat (already removed the cat), then I yanked that sucker out. I just went to autozone and found a belt that was about 2" shorter. I got real lucky and the first one i tried was perfect! I have the box with the part number on it out in the shop, i will go get it and post it for yall!

later guys,
Dave

Did you notice any increase in performance when you removed the pump?

I doubt that you would notice a peformance gain. My question is, will it throw a check engine light?? That is the only thing stopping me, and believe me I hate the noise that thing puts out.

I dont see how it would make your truck throw a light. The inlet tube for it into my exhaust was between the pre heater and the rear cat. So no matter what you did, all this would be after the o2 sensor, so I dont see how it would do anything.

I didnt really notice any difference, other than mine was worn out and was making noise. Maybe if you put your truck on a chassis dyno you could detect a very small difference, but the seat of pants dyno wont detect one bit. My check engine light hasnt come on, so that shouldnt be a problem.

Doesn't that thing have something to do with EGR? Im not sure if it causes problems or not, but if you arent using it anyhow I'd yank it out of the way. Those things are about $50 so Id keep it stuck in the shed somewhere in case you need it down the road for inspections etc.

If you gain 1 HP Id say your doing spectacular.
