Water pump is done!
Well, I thought I'd report a sucessful project completion. I bought the FRPP 5.0 water pump from Diversified for $42. This pump is sold for the Mustang, but since Autozone lists the same pump for the Mustang and my '90 F150 (302), I figured it should work.
The only little glitches that I ran into were with the backing plate, and then the pump to block gasket, as well as boogering the threads on one rusted, pitted WP bolt (New bolt from Ford = $4). The truck backing plate has the horseshoe-shaped holes in it, whereas the FRPP pump's backing plate had round holes in it. No real problem as a Dremel makes quick enough work of the holes to make them the same as OE. The gasket that came with the FRPP pump had the horseshoe-shaped holes in it, but they were oriented the wrong way! - Tough to describe, but the bottom line is, there was no way that the gasket was going to work with the truck-style backing plate. I had to make a trip to the parts store (what project don't you have to stop at least once to make a parts-store run?! LOL!) to get the right gasket, but that was easy.
We went to the beach for T'Giving and put around 400mi on the truck - so far, so good!

Oh yeah - and I did use anti-seize on all the WP bolts - thanks for the help guys!

Glad to hear that you got it done. I know exactly what you mean with your backing plate. On my previous truck I swapped in an mustang engine but, bought a new water pump for a truck. When I went to put antifreeze in; it came pouring out of the back of the water pump. (sickening feeling- antifreeze running out of a rebuilt engine) I bet I took that pump off and on 3 times before I looked at it close enough to tell what the problem was. Oh well- Live and learn.
