Question truck stalls in reverse?

My Ford has been acting up and it seems to be getting worse. Its a 94 F150, auto, 4wd. When I put in in revers it stalls, sometimes Ihave t restart it 7 or 8 times before it will actually go. No engine mods or anything. I've taken it to a few garages, to no avail. The first garage said it needed a tune up and put new plugs, cap, and rotor on, which didn't help... The next garage looked at it for a while and couldn't find anything wrong with it. I cleaned out the throtle body and replaced the idle air control valve

Other than that it runs perfect, sometimes when it doesn't stall the rpm drops way down and it seems like the engine is bogged down. Itll stay that way for a few seconds then the rpm jumps back up to normal.

Any ideas?

Try changing the trans fluid and the filter. I think some people have had theres filters come loose causing the stalling in reverse problem.

We had a truch at work do the same thing only it was in drive when it would stall. Turned out to be a defective solenoid in the tranny. It was making the convertor lockup when it shouldn't. Try taking it to a shop that can get data and codes from the tranny.
Good luck

It's the filter. It will be sitting in the pan as you drop it.

Take care,

Hmm, never thought of the trans causing the problem. So it could be a solonoid? Where it that located? I would suspect this more that the trans filter as this just started all the sudden... As for the trans filter, can this be cleaned or does it have to be replaced. What is a good recomended trans fluid for my OD auto?

This does sound to me like the filter is laying at the bottom of the pan. It could also be the TCC solenoid or Torque converter itself.

The TCC solenoid is located inside the trasnmission valve body. You have to remove the pan.

The filter is not bolted to the tranny, it is held in place by it's o-ring. It is very common for the filter to drop down suddenly (hit a bump).

Take care,

Well, I finnaly took the time to drop the trans pan and inspect things. The filter was right up where it was supposed to be, it looks like the pan holds it in place ( don't think it could drop out, well on my a4od anyway). There was a tiny, tiny amount of sludge on the bottom of the pan, and the magnet had what I would assume as a normal amount of metal for it being original with 57k miles on it. The fluid didn't seem that bad, mabey a tad dark, but didn't seem burnt. I put in a new filter, new gasket, and filled it up with some good quality fluid.

I started it up, let it idle for 10 minutes or so, checked the fluid level ( a little high but I imagine it'll get rid of what it doesn't need). Ok, big test, I droped in in R and it slid right in and the engine didn't even hesitate.... Wow, so I dropped in down into first... Perfectly slipped right into gear, the engine didn't even waiver....

So thanks for your help guys! Way to go... You guys deserve a beer
