Carb question for 1986 F150

When it comes to trucks I confess to being a moron. So I hope my question makes sense.

Just bought this used '86 F150 for my son who's just turning 16. We had to install a new carb on it. It is a straight six 4.9 L. My Bro-in-Law put it on. It runs ok, but there is a stem on the passenger side that obviously needs a line going to someplace we cannot identify.

We thought we had identified and re-connected all the lines, etc, when we put the new carb in, but we missed this one.

We tried to plug it off today, but when idling it would rev up and then almost die. Once we took the plug off it idled but it is a little rough and there is a strong gas smell.

Can anyone here figure out what I am refering to and where the line we need would run to?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Maybe the fuel canister. It is located on the passengers side frame rail just in front of the axle. Black box I'd guess about 6x6x3".
