Back-up lights

I'm hooking up my old fog lights up as back-up lights.
Would it be ok just to splice into the wire for the stock back-up lights? Would I need to do anything else? Put in a higher fuse?

As for wiring then into the existing reverse lights, I can't help you much. I bought a set of fog lights and wired up as backup lights. I did not hook them to my reverse lights though. I wired them to a lighted switch on the dash. I didn't want them coming on everytime I backed up, especially around traffic. I use them to get out of long driveways, backroads, etc.

I have them hooked up right now in the front, they are hooked up tp a lighted switch like mentioned...I didn't think about them lighting up in traffic though when I back-up...I'll just used the same switch and extend the wires to the rear...thanks.

I wired mine in directly into the reverse lights. I wanted them to come on whenever I backed up.

To many instances where a child may walk in back of the truck at night, and you certainly won't see them over the tailgate. At least with the extra lights people will see you coming.

The lights I have are 55watts. And are made just for reverse lights. They aren't super bright as to annoy people. But they are bright enough. And they pointly mainly towards the ground.

Your risking blowing a fuse with them wired in directly, or at least they won't be as bright as they could be. I would hook up a relay to the backup light circuit, and have the high current side of the relay pulling off of it's own fused circuit.

I have a pair of 25(?)W Hella backups wired so that they come on with the regular backups or with a switch so they can be used as work lights for loading the trailer. If you want a copy of the wiring schematic, I can e-mail you one. Whatever way you hook them up use a relay, your wiring harness will thank you.

That's exactly what I did. They come on with the back-up lights, but are also controlled with a dash mounted switch. Make sure you increase the size of the fuse accordingly.

Take care,

I agree that it is best to use a relay. But mine have been on for over a year and have never blown a fuse.

Hey pkrwud, aren't the fuses sized to the gauge of wire used? I wouldn't want to put a 30 amp fuse in a circuit designed to handle 10 amps.

That circuit is designed for more amps than the stock fuse. It mentioned it in the owners manual. Something about the towing package.

Take care,
