WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK MY WIFE WANTS TO BUY AN EXPLODER ITS A 1994 EXPLORER 4X4 WITH JUST OVER A HUNDRED GRAND MILES IT IS CLEAN INSIDE AND NOT A DENT OR SCRATCH OUTSIDE I WAS JUST WONDERING SINCE I SEE ALOT OF THESE COME THRU MY SHOP FOR TRANNY PROBS THATS WHY WE CALL THEM EXPLODERS BUT HOW DOES THAT 4.0 LITR V6 STAND UP IS IT A HIGH MILAGE ENGINE OR IS IT JUNK SHOULD WE BUY IT OR SHOULD I LEAVE IT ALONE WHAT DO GUYS THINK AM I GOING TO BE UNDER THE HOOD EVERY DAY OR IS IT A GOOD VEHICLE THANKS

 

We have a 2001 Explorer with the 4.0L and it runs great, good gas mileage and plenty of pickup on the interstate or cruising speeds, kind of a dog off the line.

 

WHAT ABOUT OLDER MODELS 1990 THRU 1995 SHES KINDA MAD AT ME CAUSE SHES ALL EXITED AND IM JUST TRYING TO LOOK OUT FOR HER AND OUR BANK ACCOUNT IF YIOU KNOW WHAT IM SAYING

 

AND THE WORST PART ABOUT IT IS SHE WANTS TO TRADE IN HER 1995 F-150 WITH THE 4.9 WE ALL KNOW THATS A BULLET PROOF MOTOR IM JUST SO UNDECIDED

 

THe engine is a very good one. By 94 they had everything pretty well worked out. The tranny, I think it's a 4R55E (?) is a pretty good one as well if it's the electronic version. There were some major bugs in the earlier years. Still 100K is a lot of miles, you're looking at a rebuild sooner rather than later.

 

ON THE MOTOR OR TRANNY? I OWN A TRANNY SHOP SO THE TRANS I COULD DO FOR PARTS. MOTOR? THATS A DIFFERENT STORY I CAN REBUILD SOME MOTORS BUT I KINDA STAY AWAY FROM IT I LEAVE IT TO THE EXPERTS IVE BEEN LOOKING ON VARIOUS SITES AND HAVE BEEN HEARING ALOT OF BAD THINGS LIKE HAVING TO REMOVE THE ENGINE TO GET TO THE OIL PUMP THATS SCARY BUT LIKE YOU SAID THEY WERE ALL 1993 AND OLDER I HAVE A 1994 F-150 4X4 AND IT HAS 145,000 MILES AND I WILL BET THE FARM I WILL GET EVERY BIT OF ANOTHER 100,00 MILES OUT OF IT MY ENGINE RUNS LIKE THE DAY I BOUGHT IT WITH 60,000 WILL THE 4.0 GET 200,000 OUT OF IT CONSIDERING IM A STICKLER FOR MAITINENCE MY VEHICLE DOESNT GO .9 OF A MILE OVER 3,000 FOR AN OIL CHANGE AND ALL OTHER MAIT. THINGS DONT GET PUT UNDER THE RUG MY VEHICLES ARE WELL TAKEN CARE OF SO DO YOU THINK THE 4.0 WILL HANG WITH MY 4.9 AS FAR AS DEPENDABILITY AND LIFE THANNKS YOU GUYS FOR HELPING ME OUT YOUR ALWAYS THERE WHEN I NEED YOU!

 

my g/f also drive a 94 Exploder 4.0 4x4 spedial edition...this thing is a realy good vehicle, it got about 140k w/out any problems, she's keeps up with every oil change and maintainance by the book...I've had a lot more problems with my 4.9L then she has with her 4.0...and I swear she drives that thing like a maniac...the tranny is probly going to need a rebuild soon...it's gotten considerable weaker over the last 2 years but the thing has 140k..so it would be about time for a tranny rebuild. the sad thing is she has never used the 4x4 untill i got a hold of it one day(shh she doesn't know about it) and that thing can do some serious climbing, it's a good solid vehicle and I think you should go for it as long as you know it's been well taken care of by the previous owner.
