Question Pinging - Any relation to PCV?

I am still constantly nosing around under the hood (and under the truck itself! ) of my '90 F150 whenever I get the time, in order to get more familiar with it. (I've put about 700 mi on it since I got it)
I had been getting a putrid, burnt-oil smell when I came to a stop, but I think I found the source - the PCV valve was sitting on top of the VC - just laying there. Well, I popped it back in (it rattled, so it's good, right?), and the smell seems to have been eliminated.
I drove the truck the next day(yesterday) (5.0, 146k mi) and noticed a low RPM part throttle ping in OD - especially if going up a grade. I've searched the forum for "ping" this morning, but haven't gotten to check on the timing, and the #7&8 plug wire phenomenon yet. Would putting the PCV valve back into place have anything to do with the ping? I wouldn't think so...

I don't know much about that engine or pinging but I do know that the PCV valve is supposed to rattle...maybe the hose coming from the PCV is clogged so that might be why the previous owner took out the pcv?

Yeah, I also did some searching about PCV stuff yesterday, and found out that I need to check that hose. Too bad it looks like you either have to pull the freakin' motor, or stand on top of it to get to anything back there! - LOL!

My understanding is that the truck had to have some engine work done (not real clear on exactly what was done) before I got it - could also be that the PCV was accidentally left out....

Thanks Sprocket

A tune-up wouldn't hurt also...new plugs, wires ect...

Good Luck

The PCV rattling is a good sign at least you know it's not clogged up but just because it does rattle doesn't make it a good part. On some PCV's the spring and the onsides can wear out over time. My suggestion is just replace it since you can pick one up for under $3, under 6 bucks is you want OE from the dealer.

I had three Purolator PCV valves that would rattle excessively replaced it with a Motorcraft and it stopped. Go figure, my truck likes the expensive parts.

EXACTLY!!!

The moron that first wrote in repair books that a PCV valve that rattles is good should be shot. That advice has become known world-wide, and it's wrong.

Take care,
