I could have sworn the figures the factory gives for hp are flywheel hp. I know for a fact that the hp figures over the last 5 years are flywheel hp. I have the F-Series Owner's Bible and they tested a 5.0L truck on the dynometer and it was rated at circa 130 hp at the rear wheels. This was a virtually brand new truck by the way back in '90 or '91. I wish the 185 hp was RWHP, which would mean we would have closer to 250 hp at the crank, but I know this is not the case.

Well a new 4.6l makes 231hp at the flywheel and my friend has that with 3.08 gears to my 3.31 and i can beat him or stay close to him so i know i dont have that much hp less than him i figured i had about the same

Well, as I'm sure you already know, there are several factors that determine how fast a vehicle is besides just plain hp. Your 3.31 gears to his 3.08 gears are a slight advantage in your favor. Also, you have to look at the weight of the vehicles, the transmissions of the vehicles, and probably most importantly, when you guys decide to "race". If you guys go at it off the line, I'm sure it is pretty close. The 5.0L makes 270 ft/lbs tq @ 2400 rpm. The 4.6L makes 290 ft/lbs tq @ (help me out with the rpm's). With only 20 pounds more tq PEAK, and with higher gears, the 4.6L really doesn't have too much of an advantage, so it will be very close off the line. If you guys are racing on the freeway, I'm sure it won't be as close. With around 40 more peak hp, I'm sure it would be hard to keep up with him. I don't know how much the new vehicles weigh in comparison to ours, but I do know they are a lot more aerodynamic, so that should be in his favor at higher speeds.

I really wouldn't worry too much about it. What I'd love to see is a 5.0 and a 4.6 have a pulloff. Of course with comparable gears, tires, and tranny's, we can see which engine makes better low end torque. Similarly, I'd like to see the 5.4 vs. 5.8 and the 6.8 vs. 7.5. The battle of overhead cams vs. good old pushrods!!!

well if we race off the line both of us with 1 full tank and we have the same tranny i blow him away by about 1-2 truck lengths and fro ma roll we stay dead even

tf with those 4.10s do you have much acceleration from say 80-100+?

Well, I have 35" tires, so having 4.10 gears with my tires isn't like having 4.10 gears with 28" tires. Besides I really couldn't give you a very accurate answer since my speedometer is off, so I really don't know what 80-100 is, and two, I don't have a whole lot to compare my truck to. This is the only vehicle I've eve owned, and I haven't really driven anyone else's vehicle that fast. But since I've got my pulleys and my intake manifold, I would say my acceleration is respectable from what I would guess 80-100 mph would be considering my engine is from 1990, my truck weighs 4800 lbs (with me) and I've got big tires. But I really don't think I can go faster than 105 mph without hurting my engine. In fact I know I can't. That's why I'm only running on 7 cylinders right now. Hope this helps a little.

I,ve raced a newer f150 with a 4.2 in the 1/4 mile and I beat him by 2 1/2 truck lengths.
I don't know his gears but mine are 3:31-I6

I don't remember the exact curves, but the 4.6 is more rev happy than the 302. From my experience equal configurations with equal gears gives a slight advantage to the 302. With a short gear or a 5 speed the 4.6 might pull a little harder.

I think the low end difference is enough to make up the HP gap in short runs, similar to the way the I6 pulls harder down low than the 302. Almost like they have three torque curves over the years. Real low, middle of the road, and borderline rev happy.

I'm the friend beastie is always racing. What is the curb weight of one of your trucks? I think mine is probably heavier than his. I've got an F-150 extended cab w/ the normal style side. Also have a snugtop fiberglass bedcover, a line-X spray in bedliner, and every time we have raced I've had something in the bed. At first it was a bunch of golfclubs, boxes of books, etc. Probably atleast 50-70 pounds of crap. Now I have a ****load of detailing supplies. Again probably around 50 or so pounds of crap.

Now, we did a race once (remember, beastie, the large one was with me With him in the truck that is like +1000 pounds.) and I can't remember where we started from. It was from either a slow roll or from a red light. I know I was keeping right next to you. It was right before the school zone on mirabu or however the hell you spell it.

I think stock both of our trucks were pretty freaking close. His will probably be faster now since he is putting mods in and I'm keeping my truck stock. Why does a work truck need to be fast. I'll wait till I get something else.

But, his truck is still no match for the highlander

TF, you've had your '90 up to 105?? I couldn't get my '91 past 85 at 4300 feet elevation. Truck was stock back then... it surprises me that the intake and other mods you have would make that much difference...
