Supercab, Long box - Tire/Wheel Issues
Well, I got some front end work done (ball joints) on Tuesday and I put my summer combo back on (wheels / tires - see below in sig.). Last year, I was chasing a vibration in the truck AND I still have it. The tires and wheels have been match balanced on a Hunter Load Force Balancing machine. The wheels and tires are both within specifications. I am absolutely pissed and the tires are going. I have had no problems with my OEM 15x7.5" wheels and Michelin 235/75R15 LTX M/S since last November when I put them on. The truck has no vibrations whatsoever.
I would like to know if anyone else is running this size of tires on their truck ?????? If so, are you having any problems ??????
I am going to talk to a Michelin Customer Service guy but he is on vacation for a couple of weeks.
I am looking for some suggestions. What I want is a wider tire that is good all-a-round highway driving and good in wet conditions. The tires will be STRICTLY a summer tire.
The tire shop guy (Rob) has suggested the Michelin Crossterrains in the size of 265/70R15. These tires are 29.7 inches in height compared to my 29 inch tall 235/75R15's now. Going to the Crossterrains, it would decrease my rear gear to about a 3.4? instead of the actual 3.55 but I am not worried about that. Better fuel mileage doesn't hurt anyone. Any suggestions / opinions are greatly appreciated.

Guys, have you heard of anything like this ???? I have never heard of a set of tires acting like this on any vehicle. Let alone two different sets after they have been match balanced to the wheels.
NO, all-terrain tires for me. The truck has never and I mean NEVER seen a gravel road other than a few laneway's into a few friend's place. I want good wet traction so I don't slip on take-off and they don't hydro-plane either. Also, I would like a wide tire for the summer as I think that it looks better on the truck than my 235's.

Five Letters....BFG AT ( B. F. Goodrich All Terrian)
I'm running 31x10.50 BFG AT KOs on stock rims.
And I purchased at Sam's Club cheaper than anywhere I found.
My last BFG set (BFG Trail TAs) lasted about 55K.
Don't consider the BFG Long Trail things you see everywhere.
Have never talked to someone who didn't complain of them hydro-planing.
If you don't want a real truck tire ( ok I won't start something again) I also have Dunlops on the wife's Expy and they are smoooth. Radial Rover LTs I think (she's not here or I would look) and they kick up the water in the rain. I've followed her home from a rained out little league game last week and was really impressed with how much water they cleared out.

Bottom line was that I wanted a tire that was wider and grabbed like mad when it was wet out. I lose enough to Neal and if I can get better traction when it is wet than him than I am laughing. AND when I go to the track, they will hook better than my 235's once the HP increased in the truck. My 235's have about 5 - 6/32nds of tread left and they are starting to chirp on hard launchs when it is dry. I could only go wide if I got a lower profile tire so I researched on that basis. I wanted Michelin's, no if's, and's OR but's BUT they didn't have anything that wide without going to a larger wheel size (16's or 17's). At the time, I wanted new tires for the year of 2001 and then I would get new wheels in 2002 BUT since all of this crap started, I had no option. I have spent enough money to buy one hell of a set of wheels and tires just trying to figure these things out (T/A's).
As for the passenger tires on my truck, I am not worried about that as long as they can handle my weight along with a complete load of wood. Which my Michelin LTX M/S's (105S) have done and with no problems at all. I had the wood stacked to the top of the box, front to back and everywhere in between. Drove for 1 1/2 hours back to my dad's place at 110 kmph with no problems !!! NO hard feelings
everyone's preferences are different.

PKRWUD, yeah I know !!!
Hey, when you moving up here ... can help you find a garage to buy .... LOL !!!!
Actually, I have found that my passenger LTX's (105S) give much smoother of a ride than my (108S) tires that I use for the winter. The extra load ones (108S) give a bit more bounce to them as they should since they can withstand alot more weight than the 105S's.
I have been looking at the Michelin line-up and depending upon what the Michelin Customer Service Rep. says, I may just get rid of OR trade them in for a 16x8 set of wheels (American Racing Helix) and a set of 275/60R16 Michelin LTX Pilots instead. The Pilots are a performance tire for a truck, together they are almost exactly the same size as I am now for tire height. Just have to convince the wife of the major change and then a new set of LTX M/S's for the winter time again too. The two sets I have now don't have a whole lot of tread left on them but the 105S set might get me through this winter coming and then get a new set a year from this fall.
Who knows, anyhow for now the T/A's are off of the truck and sitting in the shed waiting to see what Michelin is going to do.

Talked to the Michelin customer service rep. (A Lady) and they want to try exchanging one tire at a time to see if it is just one tire or one of the other three. The other three hasn't been been touched since last August when they were adjusted for the first new set. I asked her if I could just give her these back because I am fed up with dealing with these tire and she said that she wanted to try this first. I am just hoping that nothing happens and I still have the vibration after all three brand new tires have been put on the truck. If she wants to screw me and say that there is something wrong with my truck then I am going to get rid of these T/A's or even the entire set of wheels and tires and get something else. But I like the way the wheels look and would rather just get rid of the rubber instead. Will have to see what happens.

Well, went through all of the options of trying to eliminate the vibration and nothing worked. Truck rode smooth when I went in there and put the new tire from December on the driver's side and then one of the others and had the vibration. Took both off the truck and balanced them up even though they were matched balanced and both were out of balance. Put them back on the truck and went for another spin, still the same thing. Went through all of this with a brand new set of tires and still had the vibration. Put the LTX's back on and Rob called Michelin Customer Service but the lady was in today. So she is going to call back tomorrow and talk to Rob to see what is next in the saga of the Vibrating BF Goodrich Radial T/A's.
Rob is still suggesting the Michelin SUV CrossTerrain P265/70R15's for a replacement option for the truck. I know you guys have said other tires but I have had awesome luck with the two sets of LTX M/S's and so have a few others that I know have them as well. So, I am going to stay in the Michelin family of tires for the truck.
Beastie, if you read this. How are your tires going, any vibrations yet OR are they still good. Just trying to figure out if it is just the length of the truck give me the problem with these tires or if it is just crappy luck that I have been getting with these tires.

i've never heard of anything bad bout bf goodrich radial ta's . i had a set of euro radial ta's on a chev luv i had and i really liked the tire . i was going to get radial ta's when i got my new tires . but i am kinda partial to cooper tires and i couldnt beat the price for a comparable tire .

Macgyver, yeah there is a lot of people around here that use these tires too. I am starting to wonder if it is just a fitment problem on my truck. I am longer than most of you guy's. I am 20 ft long with a 155" wheelbase, not sure if that has anything to do with these issues or not ???????
I have had the rear shocks replaced during this process thinking it was one of them. I just had the 4 ball joints on the front end done and all aligned. The lower right hand was loose so I just went and replaced all of them while they were under there. I might even see if I can borrow a buddies truck, reg cab, long box to see if it happens on his truck too. BUT this is the kicker, last October before I put them away for the winter time, I had them matched-balanced on a Hunter Load Force machine. Found one bad tire and replaced it. Went to check the balance on them the other day just to see and they were out AGAIN !!!! You would think that they should have been okay, now mind you the last balance wasn't on the Load Force but still they were out by as much as 2 oz. on one tire.
Anyhow, Michelin said that they will cover the replacement of the T/A's and is allowing the switch to the CrossTerrains. Just have to wait for the lady to call Rob and give him a number so he can order them. She was also saying that if it still vibrates which she believes it will, that Michelin is all done with any tire replacing. I am going to try two tires on the front first to see if I still get the vibration. If the vibration is still there, I am going to talk to American Racing to see about another set of rims. Don't want to get ahead of myself but just planning the next step if needed.
