Official Response from Ford (MAF vs. SD)
Official Response from Ford (MAF vs. SD)
I asked them for a clear-cut answer here, too. I wanted to know what the determining factor was for which trucks came with speed density, and which ones came with mass air. This was their response:
I replied to this telling them that my 1995 F-150, which has a California emissions decal under the hood, came with speed density. Their response to this was:
Go figure.

As per our resources, the Speed Density (SD) on all the 1995 F-series
vehicles was set up for the 49 states emission system while the Mass Air
Flow (MAF)sensor was for California emission only.

In regards to your previous inquiry on Speed Density (SD) and Mass Air
Flow (MAF) on 1995 F-150's, we have been advised as per our Research
Department that the information that we had provided was indeed correct.

Speed density is faster for stock to mildly modified. MAF, however, allows for more severe mods, which means it's potential is virtually limitless.

Not trying to start a MAF vs SD debate as I really don't have a dog in this fight because I'll never go past the limits of either one so I don't really care but out of curiosity has anyone got experience with the programmable SD? I read some guys post on another board, ford-trucks.com maybe???, and he runs 12's or 13's w/400+ hp on a programmable SD. I think I have these numbers right. I found a site with these SD setups and they are in the $1000 range. Seems this is about the cost of a MAF swap.
FYI...I have a SD 351w.

drm7,
With the proper tune, SD can deal with much more than most of us will ever need. Check out the threads on the EECTuner over at NLOC. Performance Specialties (?) should be the forum they are in. These things take a little more knowledge and cost more than a chip, but the results are amazing. DIY tuning.....
The tuner forums are full of high output SD vehicles. I do tend to think that mass air is a little easier to deal with when tuning, but the cost of conversion far outweighs that slight advantage IMO.
