302 power vs my 351

yesturday i went to look at a trcuk. a f150 1993.
172,000 miles with a new block that has 60k on it.
exhaust is good and pretty much clean.

the only thing i can see other than obvious body work need is the drivers side valve cover gasket is leaking pretty bad. gaskets need to be changed.

well, i punched it and it was like a dog. it just didnt have the power i thought it would. i have had one and remember it being that way but it was a while ago and i thought it was just that block. it could also be the e4od tranny.

i will tell ya my 351 kicks but with 160,000 on it. running ruff but still has b@lls. i wasn't impressed at all with the power from it. maybe i am spoiled with my set up now but i don't think i am gonna buy it now. of course this would have been another wheelin truck but i am not sure i can pull off what i do now with it.

any thought s on this, i am not bashing the engine at all. it is a great motor. i am just saying how much of a noticable difference it is from my 351.

its due to the 50 or so extra lbs of torque that the 351 has. im assumming both engines are modded equally and with the same rearend gears, correct?

A 351 will out run a 302 just like a 5.4 will out run the 4.6 the biger engine is going to have more power and torque ***** the 302 and 351 are great engines and will last a long time.

yeah they are modded equally and mine is running really rough. i mean rough. i got about 11 mpg the other day on the hway coming home from wheeling. the 302 is actually running better than mine has stock tires, as with mine i have a lift bigger tires and stuff. i was just really suprised. i figured it would have more power but how much the difference was is what suprised me.

The torque of the 351 will make it feel quicker in comparision. In reality the trucks are almost dead even in the 1/4 mile with the same equipment. The initial torque advantage of the 351 will get it out of the hole quicker, but the fact that the torque curve evens out at higher revs lets the 302 keep up after the initial loss.

Similar to driving a big block car vs a small block car. Low end torque always gives the kick in the butt that makes it feel quick.

I used to own a 95 reg cab, short bed with the 5.0 w/mass air and it was ok but wouldn't spin the tires. I now have a 94 5.8 w/SD and it will burn the tires. The torque difference is really noticeable. I have a boat now so I wanted the extra power down low. Both trucks have 3.55 LS and were equally modded. The 5.8 just has more grunt. I got 1, maybe 2, mpg better out of the 302 but the trade off is worth it.

I have a 95 with a 302 and if i step on it, the tires will just squeal. I have no problem doing a big burnout without tapping on the brake. I havent had the chance to ride in a 351 but I still like the 302!!!

well i have a 302 with a manual tranny and i can spin my 33" tires with my 3.73 gears no problem. i gotta admit though, my dad has a 95 bronco with a 351/e40d and the torque difference is NIGHT AND DAY! theyre not evenly matched theough. even though his engine is stock and mine has minor bolt-ons, his only has 40k miles while mine has 195,000! IMO, theres no replacement for displacement...

I'd love to have a 351 under the hood, or better yet, a 460!!! But I will say this about my 302, it is practically maintenace free (just add gasoline and oil and she'll keep tickin'). I mean the 302 is more than capable of handling what it's meant to handle. However, I don't think it was designed to accelerate a 4800# truck with 35" tires to a 1/4 mile in 17 seconds, which is what it seems many of us expect from it. Though even with my AOD transmission, I can light 'em up pretty good. I really don't like to do this though, because the last thing I want to do is watch my tread go up in smoke, literally!!! Traction is important for 4x4's!

But one day I will have my circa '96 F-350 with a blown 460, and it'll have b@lls like a beast!!! I think the truck I'm driving now fits the criteria I have for a decent daily driver. It just needs about 50 more hp (ie: aluminum cylinder heads and a chip)
