Question H.P. Question

Hey all, this is my first post. Anyways, i have a '92 F150 with the 351 and i'm kinda curious what kind of HP it puts out? Also do any of you know where i can find a new intake system for it? I have a K&N air filter but i want to put in a whole new system. Another thing, what kind of exhaust wold you guys recommend? I want something loud that also adds power. Thanks

Hey RedRyda, welcome.
I can't say much for exhaust, because I have not choosen one yet; although, I'm leaning towards Magnaflow. However I did change my intake, I ordered the 8x5" K&N filter from truckperformance.com which was like $45 with shipping and handling. Then I made an adapter out of 1/8" steel to connect my filter up to the MAS, and then I just secured everything in place. You did not say if you had speed density or a MAS. Everything I did was for the MAS. To tell the difference the MAS has 1 tube going from the engine to the filter, while speed density has 2 tubes. Goto my photo gallery from the link in my sig and see my setup, the pictures are bad quality but they are good enough to get the idea of what I did.

I don't think the 351's came with the MAS, and certainly not in 1992. I'm about 99.9% sure he has the S/D system. Any ways, if you order the K&N FIPK, it'll set you back about $200. But I highly recommend this, or a homemade version of it! Great bang for the buck!

As far as exhaust, I'm an old fashioned guy so I go with Flowmaster, but Magnaflow also makes a great muffler. There are some rumors around that say Flowmasters will decrease your low end torque, but my friend just put a flowmaster system on his otherwise stock 5.0 F-150 and he said he noticed a slight increase on the bottom end, and a definite increase in top end power. And if you want loud, Flowmasters will definately be louder than Magnaflows.

I live out in California, so I'm pretty restriced in my exhaust choices. But I have shorty headers, a high flow cat. for the second cat., 3" piping from the first cat. all the way to the muffler, and and dual turndowns right after the muffler. To be honest, I haven't heard any fuel injected F-150's that are smog legal louder than my truck. I'm not saying that I have the optimum setup, but I do have a good one in my opinion.

You have the 351 and I'm not sure what the smog laws in your state are like, but if you can manage a true dual exhaust setup, that would really increase torque and make for a nice beefy exhuast note. If not, I don't think you can go wrong with either Flows or Magnaflows, and whatever piping/tips suit your tastes. Hope this helps

Oh, forgot to mention,

Peak hp is about 210 and peak toque is gonna be around 315 lb/ft. I can't remember the exact rpm's, but you can find exact figures and specs in any Chilton's at your local library.

I am also new here and wondering the same thing as RedRyda, sort of. I own a 1996 F-150 with 351W 5.8L. It does include the mass air flow sensor. Will I be able to rebuild the engine to get at least 400hp/tq or more? Can I do it without going internal in the engine? Or am i just silly for trying and should go with the flow and get a Lightning? Another thing can I get the power over 400 and still be street legal?

you can have 400 hp and still be legal, just make sure you pass emissions. getting 400 hp without toughing the internals of the 351 is gonna be hard (unless of course ou add a supercharger or nitrous). youre really gonna have to go with heads, cam and intake to reach 400 hp.

400hp, that is a lot of yellow stickers! I would say without going internal, forced air, or nitrous that is impossiable.

thx

Hey, thanks for all the response TF and you others. Hey TF, i would bet i can get by with a true dual exhaust, i live in arizona but i'm not to sure what would be wrong with having that. Is there anyplace online i could find something like that? And my truck does not have a MAS but i'm gonna get one soon. I was wondering, do any of you have aol instant messanger or anything like that?

RedRyda, dont be in a huge hurry to get mass air. most of the 1st generation lightning guys with 351's opt for a custom tune instead of mass air, it will give you more power and a LOT less headaches. go here: www.nloc.net and read some of their posts. they even have a section listning all the different tuners. just an idea, good luck!

If it were up to me, I wouldn't want 400 hp unless I touched the internals of the engine. I would definately recommend forged pistons, connecting rods and a tough crankshaft. You're likely to damage these components with that much power and no reinforcement. Any time you add forced induction or nitrous oxide, you're gonna want to make sure your engine is very healthy and strong to withstand the extra power produced by these mods. Also, not counting blowers and nO2, and not counting cams, heads, rollers, etc. how would you expect to account for 200 hp? Bolt-ons will only get you so far. Even with a full on exhaust, induction, ignition, chip, and maybe some minor trinkets like pulleys, heat spacers, etc. would be lucky to give you 300 hp. If you want 400 hp in an emissions tested vehicle, you better make sure you have a ton of $$$ on hand!!! A supercharger would be a great place to start. That alone will get you to around 300 hp. Then, with a nice cam, a good set of aluminum heads, some roller rockers, intake manifold, throttle body, air filter, tubular, high flow exhaust system, some ignition upgrades, etc. you should get pretty close to the desired 400 hp. But I can't imagine not spending upwards of 8-10 grand for all of this (including an engine rebuild with heavy duty pistons, crank, etc.).

I work at Circuit City on the weekends so I get great deals on car stereo items. Naturally, I got all my stereo equipment at Circuit City. I can't turn down 50% off everything, including extended warranties and install!!!
