Gauge cluster going bad

My speedometer jumps around about 5mph up and down i can tell how fast im goin but its getting aggrivating also i cant use cruise control because of this
Also i have dual fuel tanks and they are on 1 gauge well at the same time as my speedo went crazy my rear tank quit measuring (its always on E) well about 3 weeks after that my other tank stopped measuring too
I changed the speed sensor in the rear end for the speedo but that didnt help
Is my whole gauge cluster going bad? or could i have a bad ground?
Any help is appreciated ty

When you turn your key on-engine off, do all the usual lights come on?
Have you checked every fuse?

When I'm at work I always blame electrical problems on the aftermarket stereo/security installs. I have seen some pretty good hack jobs by so-called professionals. Do you question your installs?

The cluster is usually the strong link, speedos and sending units are pethetic looking. But since they all went inop together, I'm thinking what you are.

yes when the key is on, engine off, all the usual lights come on.
Every fuse checks out okay and i have done all the electrical work and know it is not faulty

Mac & CrazyJ,
I think you guys need new sending units(inside tank(s) connected directly to the float and pump). They often go in GM cars, but Fords are of similar design. Its just a resistor board mounted on the side of the fuel pump assy, connected to the float. I replaced my rear tank and know that one is a PITA to bring down. Having an empty tank is a plus. The front is probably alittle easier due to more room to work with. When pulling the pump out, be careful not to jerk the floatand rod off. For most Saturns(what I work on) there is a test to determine whether or not the guage is inop or not. Ford probably has a similar test.

it is easier to pull the bed then drop a tank . i've done both . when i get round to painting my truck probably pull the bed anyhow . dunno bout these new senders but i know old ones a simple test was to ground the wire to the sender . if the gauge went to full then it was the sender .

Well, i found out the other night, was goin down a hill and it just died wouldn't start back up so (stupid me) i turned it off and steering column locked up! holy ****! so i turned ignition back on so i could steer(Stick shift) and got to the bottom at my uncles, got some gas with his truck and started right back up.. I about **** my pants goin down the hill....

EDIT: Since i know my tanks are empty.. I should go ahead and put new units in huh...

LoL.
It might be a good idea to slide in the back door of a dealership and ask one of their trained mechanics how to test the guage/ sending unit. There might be a connector some where on the frame easily accessible to ground something or jump something.

humming down the road I shut off the key and.....
