Tranny swap
Tranny swap
I posted this question in the tranny forum but since that one doesn't get much too much traffic from us pre-97 guys i though i would post it here too.
I want to swap a C6 into my '92 F-150 in place of the computer controlled e40d. Will disconnecting the tranny wiring harnes and installing a 1970's tranny screw anything up, other than the speedo?

I don't know. Lets figure you did unplug it. Does the computer expect to see any rpm changes when shift signals are sent? I'm thinking no. The computer is just reacting to O2, air temp, throttle angle, coolant temp, ect. I would think in the early/mid EEC-IV systems the trans control and engine control are seperate. yet inside the same box. I have lit. on this but may take time to dig up
I'll get back to you monday

Ok. The computer doesn't depend on anything that the trans does(inputs) other than stuff that controls trans performance. The engine controls are all done by listening to engine inputs. The trans control is part engine inputs and part trans inputs.
I have to make short replys or my server disconnects me.

So, if you unplug your trans the worst that might happen is a CEL because the computer isn't seeing anything from trans. This makes computer put trans into limp home mode--2nd gear only. But it doesn't matter if a C6 is sitting there working independantly.
The only problems I see you might run into are rigging up some kind of throttle valve (TV) cable/linkage for the C6, starter relay is sometimes run thru the trans(so it can only be started in park or nuetral), and the back-up lights, and finding a decent manifold vacuum for your "load" sensing downshift for the c6.
All of these are only mechanical problems. Something is usually figured out easily once you are looking at situation.
Other problems might be fabbin a trans mount and hooking up the manual valve / shift lever
To me it still sounds like work.
Good luck

Doesn't sound like too bad of a job, I had planned on switching out the engine and tranny eventually anyways so it would have been done sooner or later. Hopefully the C6 which came off a 351W will bolt up to the 4.9L I have that info around here somewhere....
Thanks,
