this is what I'm thinkin..

Ford 5.0L truck K&N FIPK......................186-ouch!
Holley universal cone w/3" opening.......40(x2)

intake tubes on truck have 3 1/8 openings w/smooth inside.
Need something to clamp filters' openings onto.
Soup cans have 3" diameter..... ahw close enough.

Wa-la! $100 saved.
A little glossy black paint and no one will notice the soup can between the filter and rubber air tubes.

Other things I've been thinking...MAF cone filter adapters. Its just a plate with a ring on it. Some don't even need the plate. Anyways I'll have to measure up the MAF from a newer truck to see if I can Fab anything useful. I've got one drawn up for my Subaru. I have welder and sheet metal, projected cost-$0 plus $40 cone filter.
Just thinking out loud

LOL!
I've also been caught in home depot measuring various rubber hoses and metal things - for truck/car applications.

other things running rampid in my mind...
*custom truck 3" tube rear bumper. HD indeed.
*Stainless induction, truck.
*subaru "dual" exh.(boxer engine)
*my own design radius arms, truck.
*rally light/pre-runner bumper bar for subaru.
*hella light mounts for my smittybilt front bumper.
*spare tire mount for truck bed, so it stands up in front/center of bed. with provisions for real jack and breaker bar and varios other "off road" essencials.

Well while you may get the better flow from the filter, The fipk is designed to flow much better, I personally don't think you can get that from a straight tube.

considering the fipk for our year trucks utilizes the stock tubes there isn't any difference in buying a almost $200 fipk . only thing you get for that is the oval/cone type filter, the mounting hardware and a lighter wallet. there are others on this pre 97 board that have had FIPK's and have recently tried mine and others air box mods and have posted that they have the same response as they did with they're fipk's .

Intake mods are easy on a 5.0. IMO money spent on the FIPK could be saved by doing the mods yourself. My friend bought the FIPK for his truck, I modded my airbox and installed a drop in K&N. SOTP no difference, his truck wouldn't outrun mine. The big difference was that I had money left over for a pulley set!

Sabre Yachts, S. Casco, Maine. I live approx 4 miles from the place. They are building a new and bigger buildings so they can go up to 60 footers now. I was their when they were just beginning their 42 wides and power boats. They weathered a low in the economy now things are looking good over there. I quit to go to tech school in 98. The morning i quit my supervisor said they were considering me as a supervisor on one of the finish platforms. OH Well. If i ever get tired of turning wrenches I could always go back there. I was a pretty decent place to make stuff

Bayliner. Wow! Those are nice.

Thumbs up

I did mostly finish fit and carpentry on sail boats. I started on the newer 46' power boats (twin 300 Cats). I'm not sure what size they are now but I still see them getting trucked down the road from time to time. If you go on their web site I'm in one of their group pics- last time i checked. We did warrentee on a deck that had bad gel-coat once. The owners never emptied their waste tanks...PPHHEEEEEEEEwwww! Phew for 5 weeks straight replacing their deck. We ruined their wood because of the dozens on cans of Lysol we used, they didn't care about the interior. Only the deck

I see I'm not the only one that has worked on boats. I worked in a couple of yards hauling everything from little runabouts to 50' or so sportfishing rigs. Lot's of nice custom stuff in the area.

I also did a lot of diving work and yacht management for local big bucks guys. My favorite was a big custom Viking sportfishing rig. Everything known to man and then some. Enclosed and upper bridge, then tower. Swwweeeeeeeet!
