Post Update on the Superchip...

Well, I figured something had to be wrong. There's no way that this chip is working how it is supposed to work so I gave superchips a call. I explained the situation and asked if the chip not being flush with the ecu box had anything to do with the lack of peformance gain and they said that it is fairly common, and most likely not. When I told them they had to create a new file for my ecu code they told me that more than likely, the program just has to be tweeked a little.

I asked them what I was supposed to feel from the chip and they said baically, increased throttle response. I told them that was exactly the opposite of what I felt so I'm sending the chip in, and they're gonna mess with the file. So, I will give them one more shot, but they said it will take a few weeks. In the meantime, I'm not sure if I want to invest in the throttle body, since I'm technically not being refunded for the chip just yet. But I've only heard good things about those throttle bodies so I have a feeling I won't regret getting that. I just think that with the chip, it is such a fragile mod. much like ignition upgrades. They are so sensitive to timing, air/fuel mixtures, temperatures, and all sorts of factors. Everything has to be just right for them to work. But when they do, it's great. With mechanical parts like heads, tb's, pulleys, etc. I get the feeling they're more consistent and not so susceptible to variables. I'll keep you guys posted...

Cool

TF, are you dealing with Mike Troyer from this board OR are you dealing with the guys in Florida at Superchips ????? If you are dealing with the guys in Florida, maybe give Mike Troyer a call and see what he has to say about your problems.

Hope you get it sorted out. Kind of scary to think they just created a code????

Either way, you might want to make sure your money back guarantee clock isn't ticking while they work on it.

Post Here's an update to the update...

I think I'm just going to return it for now. Reasons being:

- Even if they solve the performance issue, I've still gotta worry about a clean way to secure my ecu box to the side panel. A minor detail to some, but when I go offroad, I don't want that think jerking back and forth, banging up against the panel and screwing things up.

- I'm still planning on getting the throttle body sometime, plus aluminum cylinder heads and an intake manifold. I'm pretty sure I'll need a custom chip burned with those kind of mods. so why spend money now when I would just have to pay to get a chip reburned later on (hopefully within two years at the most).

- I want to get everything done now during spring break, otherwise I'll wait 'til summer. My finals almost gave me an ulcer because worrying about my truck (and how it was performing/getting it to run again in the first place) combined with 3 tests in a 30 hour span taught me a lesson. Worry about my truck when I have free time. When class starts again, I don't want any distractions. I can do the throttle body over spring break. If I do the chip, I would be getting it probably 3-4 weeks from now, right when I need to start preparing for my next midterms.

IzzyEddy,

By the way, I was talking with the guys down in Florida, not Mike Troyer. But my mind is made up at this point. Right now I'm a little shaky about trying supechips again. A college student only has so much money to burn and I want to spend my money wisely right now. I don't want to go through another fiasco like this when I'm in school with no days off (I work Sat./Sun.). Now's the time to take care of business.

P.S. Off the subject, but I've created my online photo gallery. I haven't posted any pictures yet, but Friday I'm planning on taking some pictures of my truck (I don't have any yet with my new grill guard and fog lights). So hopefully Friday evening they will be up for your critiquing pleasure

Where is the ECU located on your truck ??? On my truck it slides into the firewall on the driver side of the truck. Once it slides in completely, it sits behind the emergency brake bracket. Is this the same with yours. I have my ECU back in it's stock location with the superchip on.

This is I have to agree with you on. Do all of your modifications and then get the chip. They will be able to properly adjust the chip for the modifications that you have on the truck.

TF, please do yourself and I a favour and call Mike Troyer for your next superchip if that is who you decide to go with. From everything that I have read on this board, I believe the Superchip to be the best at what it needs to do. To back that chip's performance up, you deal with Mike Troyer for some of the best knowledge of the product and what it can do for you.

Well, I returned the superchip today, but I'm about 90% sure I'll give them another shot in the future when I'm finished with my other mods. Even people at Edelbrock spoke highly of them when I mentioned the situation. I called them to inquire about the throttle body, intake manifold, and cylinder heads and I gave them a little background info. So I'm sure it'll all work out eventually.

BTW, my ecu is located in the same place. But the reason why I can't slide it back into its stock position is because the chip doesn't sit flush with the box so it obstructs the ecu box from being able to fit in the space provided. If you look next to your ecu box where the chip goes in, you'll notice a corner that sticks out a bit in the side of the truck. Just imagine a chip sticking out about a half inch or so and you should see why I can't get my box into place.

Does Mike Troyer have an extension posted somewhere. I have e-mailed him regarding superchips and he was helpful in my decision to go with them in the first place. But I'll know to contact him directly in the future. Thanks.

DAMNIT!!!

I guess I didn't post in time. I left detailed instructions in your other post for proper installation, and really wanted to see if that solved it for you. I'm feeling pretty confident it would have. Oh well.

Take care,
-Chris

PKRWUD,

I'm sorry I didn't get to try "the method that works" before I sent it back But I appreciate your help any ways. I'll copy the instructions and after I've done all my Edelbrock mods. I'll give the chip another try, this time following your directions!

BTW, I've heard *mostly* good things about Superchips. But have you heard anything about Jet chips as far as the '87-'96 302's go? I know you've had good luck with Jet chips so it's just something to consider. Well, thanks again!

Honestly, I had always heard that JET chips were nothing but junk, but mine was awesome, so I'm thinking they must have improved their quality. I have heard positive things about them for a '95 5.0, but older than that, nothing.

Take care,
-Chris
