Early Morning, No Start

I have a problem with my 89 302, 5-speed. When I try to crank the truck in the mornings, it will not turn the starter. Plenty of juice to run a/c, etc., just no starter. As the day warms up, it fires right up.

We thought it was the clutch switch not making good contact, so we bypassed the switch. Didn't help.

Any suggestions? Thanks.

Bob

Next time try rapping on the starter relay on the fenderwell with the handle of a large screwdriver, and then see if it cranks over. if it does, replace the relay.

Take care,
-Chris

I had that problem..I just climbed under there and found out the wiring to the starter and solenoid was dirty and the wire wasn't fully pushed on...it did the same thing you descibed..not start in the mourning(cold) but fire right up a few hours later.

Btw...can you here the starter...do you hear anything when you turn the key...but first listen to PKRWUD...he's smart.

ford starter relays are nortorious for this problem . i had an older maverik would do the opposit . start cold and not hot . or just die going down the road . didn't know why . did lots of work on it . one day i was talking to someone bout it and said the only thing i haven't replaced yet is the relay (reached over and smacked it with a screw driver) and it died . replaced it ,never had a problem again.

Wink

The problem has been identified. Two sharp raps on the relay with the trusty screwdriver and she fired right off. Thanks everyone. You have been a great help.

The starter relay can be replaced for about $12.
On my 1961 ford van, I used to clean the disk inside the starter relay.
My relay went out on my 1996 F150 at about 100,000 miles.
Thanks,
Gene
