trailer towing

I have a 95 F150 that does not have the trailer towing package. I now have a trailer with electic brakes that I need to hookup. I realize I need to buy the electric brake controller. It looks like Ford has the hookup for the brake controller at part of normal wiring under the middle of the dash.

My question is does anyone know if Ford runs the brake control wires to the rear of the truck as part of the normal wiring. I didn't see any unused connectors at the rear of the truck. If the wires are there does anyone know what color they are or were the terminate.

Thanks for any help.

Mark

I'm afraid I won't be of much help. My truck has a 4-wire plug tucked into the wiring that goes to the license plate light, and works for the brake lights and turn signals on a trailer, but I know nothing about electric brakes. I didn't buy my truck new, so I don't know if the wiring I mentioned is considered part of the "towing package", or is just stock on all trucks. Ray (Macgyver) is a motorhome expert, and is well versed in heavy duty applications. He might have the answers you are looking for.

Good luck!

Take care,
-Chris

sorry this thread musta been posted when i was out of town .

if your truck doesn't have a "TOW" package the wiring normally isn't there . and pre late 90's trucks don't have brake controller wiring under the dash . well in fact none of them have any more then a plug to connect a harrness to for the controller . and then you need to install 2 relays in the dist. box under the hood . and you also may need to connect the brake wires under the hood also (blue wire)
my suggestion if you do not know if you have the wiring is to buy 20' of double jacketed wire . route it to the rear of the truck down the left side frame rail from the engine compartment . normally this wire has one blue and one black wire . route the blue wire through the firewall and connect to blue wire on brake controller . connect the black one to the "AUX" side of a 30 amp circut breaker along with another 2' piece of black wire the same size as the other. route this 2' wire to the brake controller through the firewall also . connect it to the black wire on the brake controller.
then get another 2' piece of wire . preferably white . attach an eye connector to one end and ground it to the firewall with a screw . route the free end to the brake controller . connect to the white wire on it . this leaves the red wire on the brake controller still not connected . attach a short piece of wire to it and attach the free end to a red/lt. green wire on the brake light switch . (test it for power first with the brake pedal depressed ) connect your plug at the rear . find your light wires attach to diagrams supplied with socket.(green-right turn, brown-tail lts, yellow-left turn,white-ground,black-12v+,blue-brakes) the blue wire you routed is the brake wire . the black wire is the charge line . after socket is wired up . go back to the circut breaker in the engine compartment . attach it to the firewall also . on the battery side of it attach another piece of wire long enough to reach the battery or a sutable power source on the distribution box . and attach . that all there is to it :-)........lol
