Dual Exausts=Better Gas Mileage???

I have a 1995 F-150 5.0 V8 302 and I get terrable fuel mileage. And by terrable I mean 5-6 MPG!!! I've heard that getting dual exausts increases fuel mileage. Is that true??? Also I've heard that a K&N Air Filter will do the same. Is that true??? And finally.... is their any other suggestions anyone has to get better fuel mileage??? I just cant afford to disk out $35 a WEEK on gas.

Thanks in advance!

yes its true, those things will help. Sounds like you've got to do some maintenance too. Check emmisions, tune-up, check tires, alignment. 5-6 isn't good. I spend 20-30 a week on gas but I drive alot to get to work. Approx 60 miles round trip, mostly back roads. You'll like dual exhaust.

Agreed. Those mods will help, but you have a much more serious problem that needs to be corrected first.

Take care,

I got a very slight bump from my exhaust. About 1/2 mpg from the pulleys and real good gains from the ignition. Personally I've never notice MPG improvements from intake changes on any of my vehicles.

If you're in the 5-6 range something is very wrong. My '95 Supercab 4x4 is usually over 15 around town. Even if I beat on it for a whole tank 13-13.5. Stock it would at least break 10 even beating on it.

Yes, I agree!!!!! I have a '90 302, 4x4, with 4.10 gears, an AOD tranny, 35" mud tires, and a very impatient right foot. I still get about 11 mpg. And to be honest, I noticed more of a mileage decrease when I installed my K&N FIPK, probably because I had even more of a tendency to stand on it. Exhaust is supposed to give you a minor increase, and I hear that ignition systems will give you a boost, like signmaster said. But I think we're all in agreeance here, spending money on these mods. are only going to treat some of the symtpoms of your problem, they aren't a cure for the real issue you have. I would suggest getting a tune up and from there, maybe they can spot the real problem that your vehicle has. I'm not a truck doctor by any means so I couldn't give you too many possibilities as to what the trouble could be.

P.S. I don't know about the smog laws where you live, but in my neck of the woods (California) it isn't smog legal to switch over to true dual exhaust. We have to sport the psuedo dual exhaust, 1 inlet pipe, two outlet pipes from the muffler. I'd give anything to have a truck with true duals.

well anywhere it is illegal for a exhaust shop to remove a cat . they can be fined lots of $$ and possibly lose they're license .
i have a 90 F150 w/302 also . i have seen as much as 19.5 mpg (one time) but i was averaging 15.5 . since it started running crappy that dropped to 11 . at it's worse . after getting it running right again i am back to 13.5 average and that would be higher if my egr was working right . as soon as i get that fixed i expect it to go back to around 15 . my exhaust didnt change my mileage . it just improved the performance. the air filter mods i havent noticed any gains from either cause i find my foot in it more too....lol..any mods i do aren't for a MPG standpoint but from a performance standpoint . i want it to run better and run faster not to worried bout fuel economy......lol....

You've definitely got a problem. I have a 96 much like yours & I can say dual exhaust gave me 1-2 mpg better + a noticable difference in power. I was getting about 13-14 in city, after the exhaust I get 14-15 in city driving 16-18 highway. I also didi the K&N drop in filter & didn't notice a bit of difference either way. Do the duals, but first get a good tune up as something else is killing your mileage.
