hey macgyver, i did the airbox mod...

and i LOVE IT! holy crap, i felt a HUGE gain in the midrange and top end! and now with the straight pipes and this mod, the truck sounds wicked at WOT. cant tell if my mpg changed because i find myself driving at WOT every chance i get just to hear the engine (sounds almost exactly like a nascar, just not quite as loud). thanks for the tip, you're the man!

youve started a trend. we should call it the "Macgyver Airbox Mod" . by the way, it rained REALLY REALLY hard today and i was a little nervous of trying it out just in case water could get in there, but i went for it and ran over puddles and everything, and there was no water even near the airbox, so it should be safe.

well , i'm not the one that thought of the idea . i just elaborated on it and adapted it to my truck . i couldnt afford $200 for an fipk .
not after putting over $500 into my truck to get it running right again.

next i was thinking of modify'n the snorkle through the rectangular hole next to the radiator to push in cold air . or maybe another type of large diameter hose .just attaching it to the wheel well below the air box on the engine side of it .

it could, but from what ive heard, mass air sensors are very sensitive, so i dont know if it will give you any sort of engine code. i would guess that it should work because this mod works just like a FIPK. theres only one way to find out if it will work ...

macgyver,
thats a good idea using the snorkel to blow cold air into the airbox. your idea seems similar to what PKRWUD did on his truck with his FIPK.

That hole just looks like it was made for a ram air setup, doesn't it? Do a search, I think Chris (PKRWUD) had some pics of his. He made a little scoop that grabs air from the grille opening and routed it to the filter on the FIPK.

You did the cone filter adapt, correct?

Just curious. I was planning on the cone filter adapt and leave the bottom of the box. Insteas I did the skeleton thing on the box, except for the side towards the engine. I left the cool air tube in place, with the drop in K&N. BIG difference over the K&N in the stock box.

Ray-

You're on a roll! Check out some of the pics on this page on my website to see what I did. There is a tube (formally a heater duct from a '79 fairmont) that directs air from a hole in the bumper to directly underneath my relocated K&N. I also pried open the flap covering the opening next to the radiator, creating a "ram air" effect. Works awsome.

Take care,
-Chris

i removed the complete bottom of the box . it was full of oil from blow by and the old crankcase filter . another reson i removed the snorkle is the way it was designed it did nothing but funnel in water . i will fab something today at lunch and take some pics of it . i'll get back to y'all on this one ...lol

Just got done doing the "macgyver mod" as well and I'm very very pleased with the results. The truck runs so much better now its not even funny, and the sound at WOT...mmmm i love it

It honestly feels like I picked up 10-15 hp, and i still have the paper filter in it! It took about 10 minutes and was very easy. I recommend it to everyone

Thanks,
scott
