Question Mass Air or speed density?

I want to add a K&N air filter to my 95 F-150 5.0 4x4, A/T. How do I tell if I have mass air? Is it really worth the money?

Look between the throttle body and and the air box. If there is an aluminum meter with a wiring harness going to it, you have mass air. Since the truck is a 95, it should be mass air.

Is a K&N worth it? Don't expect to feel any HP gains with it. It can be cleaned, which saves some money over the long run. I put them on all of my cars.

A K&N FIPK will yield much more noticable results than a K&N drop in filter. If there are two tubes going from your airbox to your throttle body. it's speed density. If there is one tube, it's mass air.

Take care,

A K&N FIPK is one of the best ways you can spend $160 on your truck. Noticeable hp gain (especially mid-range and on the freeway) and they last forever so you save money in the long run. The only downside to them is they're kind of a pain in the a** to clean if you go off-roading a lot as dirt, mud, and debris collect in the pleats of the filter easily. But overall, the FIPK is DEFFINITELY worth it! Besides a supercharger or tricking out the engine itself, there's not much out there that will give you more power for your dollar. A nice exhaust system will give you about the same resuts, but at 2-3 times the cost. I haven't personally tried ignition systems or a supechip, but I've heard mixed results with those. Any other "bolt-on" mods. will either be less effective or more expensive.

I agree. A drop in filter alone won't do much. One of the guys on another site had a dyno of a 351 with a stick and got about 5 HP. Not bad for the price, but not something you would really notice either.

On my truck I did my own mods to the airbox and noticed gains over the filter alone. It is also fairly easy to adapt a cone type filter to the MAF on the mass air trucks. The hoses are smooth on the inside anyway, to there isn't much restriction.

i also modified my air box and bought a K&N filtercharger for it . i noticed a improvment right off . the fipk for my truck will/would cost me slightly over $200. i did this for $50 . my exhaust work cost me $200 also . i also noticed a big improvment there . next maybe pulley's/chip? who knows . see what i can afford right now after putting $550 into it to get it running right .

Macgyver,

Something's wrong here. We have basically the same truck and you say it costs you over $200 for the same FIPK I paid $160 for (plus tax). Try checking out Jeg's high performance mail order sometime, they have great prices, great selection and good customer service as well. I was looking into buying the Edelbrock intake manifold, so I called Edelbrock and they quoted me at $960 or somewhere around there. Jeg's has it for $550! They'll save you a few bucks

Mass Air vs Speed Density

Ok, I used to have a 95 F150 5.0 a/t and it had 1 big tube coming from the throttle body to an wired aluminum block near the airbox (the MAF sensor I presume). I put the K&N FIPK on it and it came with all the necessary hardware to attach to the MAF and also mount the little do-hicky tempsensor??? located in the stock airbox above the filter. It sounded like a 60's 4bbl at WOT. It was so loud that I couldn't hear my flowmaster exhaust.

To my point, I moved to DC and needed a 'city' truck so I bought a Cherokee. Now I'm back in the country and just bought a 1994 F150 4x4 RC/SB w/the hard to find 5.8l. It has 2 tubes coming from the throttle body to the airbox and I didn't see any wired aluminum block so do I have speed density? I believe the engine was manufactured in Dec 1993. What can I do to the engine and not throw any codes? I'm planning a drop in K&N with a bored out airbox (cheap fipk). My friend took a 1/2" drill bit and put 20 holes in his box to simulate the FIPK. Seemed to work fine. With speed density can I do Jacobs/MSD, etc w/o affecting the computer? I heard something about switching to MAF, is this possible, is it worth it?

Thanks, I'm new so take it easy on me.
