1996 F150 XL 4wd
New to me truck. Posted question on the general discussion board and was advised to post here. Can anybody give me the sweet and low down on this model. It's a short box 4X4, 5 speed 300 I6 w/ air cruise and tilt package. Very happy with the truck just don't know much about it and would like to know more. The pros, the cons, specs, features that aren't already obvious.
Thanks in Advance

It's an excellent truck. The 300ci (4.9L) engine is arguably the best engine Ford ever made. They aren't race engines (although some things can be done), but they are strong, long life engines. I have never owned a Ford 4x4, but one of my neighbors (actually, he just moved) has 3 Ford 4x4's. None of them are 4.9L's, but he said that's what he wants. He said in the Bronco world, the choice setup is the 4.9L. I can tell you that my '95 4.9/5spd has been put through hell and back, and it keeps asking for more. The only feature I can think of that you will likely have trouble with is one we've been recently discussing here, and that's the interval wipers. The multi-function switch, which is behind the steering wheel, and houses the controls for the turn signals, wipers, high beams, etc.,is prone to wearing out early in life. It is most notable when trying low speed interval wiper settings. I have outlined the test procedure on my website, so if you're having trouble with yours, let me know, and I'll guide you to the routine. For more power, I have found installing a K&N FIPK yielded the best bang for the buck. Other mods I've done are in my signature below.
Take care,

I owned a 87 f150 4.9 4x4. it was great. i towed cement mixers with it. ran it while it was over heating. hell and back is a good statement pkrwud. i can't say a bad thing about it. i would buy a truck with that engine before one with a 302 imo.
pkrwud i liked your site. like the boss sticker too. curt

300 4x4
I have an 89 Bronco w/ a 300 paired w/ a 5 spd, and also a 93 F150 4x4 w/ a 302 auto, while I like the 5 spd in the bronco and the torque of the 300, but nothing can beat the sound of the 302, I haven't had a bit of trouble w/ the 300 though, it runs great and takes all kinds of hell. I'm a 21 year old country boy and I like to use the 4x4 for all it's worth, so needless to say, I haven't been easy on it. I love Fords, and as long as you go w/ a 4x4, you're even better off, espeicially with that body style, that's what I love about the look of my truck. Good choice!
