Fuel System
Fuel System
My 93 XLT with dual tanks runs fine when feeding from the rear tank. When running fuel from the front tank, performance is normal with easy accelerations. With requests for fast accelerations, the engine bogs down. If I switch to the rear tank while still bogged down and gas pedal floored, the truck responds immediately with normal full acceleration performance. The only thing I can think of is that I previously added STP Injector cleaner to the forward gas tank (maybe in high concentration) that may have loosened trash in the tank, which may be restricting maximum fuel flow. Can anyone think of something else that may cause this problem, that exists only when I feed fuel from the forward tank? If you think my guess may be correct, what's my next move?
Thanks.
Thanks.
It's probably the fuel pump. There was an issue for a while where one pump would overpower the other, and would end up filling the other tank, but I don't think that applies to you. It seems like they cleared that up by 1992. Anyway, your truck is going on 9 years old, and the front tank (and pump) traditionall see more use than the rear, and therefore wear out sooner. I would try a fuel pressure test to confirm it, but your description leaves it pretty open and shut.

Fuel Pump Replacement
Guys,
Is it as simple as disconnecting filler tube, dropping the tank with a board on a jack and R&Ring the fuel pump? Are there any tricks or gotchas that I'm not seeing? I look at this repair as an adventure, but i don't want to end up in my driveway calling for a real wrench to get me back on the road. Any response appreciated.

People have recommended taking the bed off instead. Just open the bed bolts, filler necks and lights, get your buddy to help you pull the bed back a few feet and you'll have access to the tank. I've heard it should be less of a PITA than dropping the tank.
