Question Back up lights???

About a year ago my back up lights would not turn off.
They would stay on even when the truck was turned off.
My solution = I removed the bulbs.
My truck is a 1995 5.0 with a 5 speed manual.
Any ideas on what might be wrong?
I would like to have my back up lights back.

thanks

My first guess would be a short, or some messed up wiring. I'd simply get a test light and find a wire that is hot only when it is supposed to be, then hook the back up light wires into that wire.

Would the switch be mounted internally or externally??

According to BroncoAZ on a previous post:

Mazda built 5 speed fully synchronized transmission found in 1988 to present Ford F150 series trucks and full size Broncos. Aluminum case, extension housing, and shift cover, with integral bell housing. Very similar in design to M5R1, but larger with shift lever located in center of shift cover. Available in 2 and 4WD versions. 1995 and later models have top cover reverse light switch moved to forward corner of shift cover. In 1996 case is changed to accommodate modular motor (4.6L), with starter bolt pattern being triangular. In 1999 the case was changed for 4.2L 4wd drive vehicles. The case is very similar to earlier style units with case length shorter on 4.6L and 4.2L models

Hope this helps, a little at least

Of all the times to disable editing!

The back-up light switch is #18 in the image above.

Take care,

Wait a minute. You said the back-up lights are always on, do you mean even with out the key? The power wire to the back-up lights comes from a fuse in the engine compartment, through the back-up lamp switch in the tranny, and to the bulbs. If the key is off, the fuse in the engine compartment doesn't receive any power, which means the switch won't have any power, so it wouldn't matter if the switch was good or bad. If they are on all the time, then you have a hot wire shorted to the wire that goes through the switch, and you need to trace it. If you meant that the lights are always on when the key is on, then it's more than likely a defective switch.

Take care,
-Chris

Hehe, sorry man. Didn't mean to steal your thunder. I figure I'm paying for ALLDATA, I might as well use one of their diagrams now and then.

Take care,

Well you know how worn out the ignitions get on the fords.
I will have to put the bulbs back in and check = after I make sure the ignition is "truely off". Right now I can start my truck with out a key. The poor thing is worn out.
