Exhaust options

I am considering the addition of either a Magnaflow cat, muffler, and pipes or the Bassani system consisting of headers, cat, muffler, and pipes.

Was wondering if anyone can comment on the improvements these systems will make relative to one another. If you've been following my posts lately you'll see that I'm "upgrading" my 302-equipped SuperCab to handle a 3-horse slant load trailer weighing approximately 4400 pounds dry. We have rolling hills here in central Georgia, however most of the horseback rides I do are in Florida so that means downhill all the way to FL (sea level), then uphill all the way back to Macon. A few rides are in the Carolinas--so there are some good-sized hills I'll encounter... I need the most performance for the buck, and durability too as the truck will need to last 2-3 years till I buy a new diesel.

The Bassani system is about $1000. Not sure what the MagnaFlow costs... Just trying to find out if the Bassani will be worth the money as it includes headers and claims +44hp and +65ft-lbs.

Thanks, too for the replies on my air bag message--going to order a set of Firestone Ride Rites.

Cool

Mike, if haven't already done work to the front end (intake) of the motor, you might want to think about that too. I found with my truck via all of my travelling that on certain hills, the truck would downshift out of overdrive. I installed the K&N FIPK and the truck never downshifted again, even when I had a full load of wood (long box) !! When allowing the engine to expel the exhaust quicker, you should allow it to breath easier on the front end.

And although you may not wish to buy more expensive gas, the Superchip may be a excellent option for you as well. Along with the extra HP and Torque, it also firms up the shifts via line pressure in the transmission which in turns eliminates some of the slippage in the bands. With the towing that you will be doing, this would a definite benefit for the long haul (durability) of the truck. Right now, the truck is designed to have a certain amount of band slippage when shifting between gears to create that "car" like feeling. The chip increases the line pressure to lessen the amount of slippage in these bands while shifting which lengthens the life time of the bands in the transmission.

You should give Mike Troyer as call (see chips section for e-mail and phone number info). It seems to me that he handles the magnaflow stuff in his company. If he doesn't he is an excellent person to bounce stuff off of since he has seen various products tested in different configurations and he would know what works and what doesn't. He also sells the Superchip, should you wish to ask question about it OR even purchase it. He!!, you might even have a, one stop shopping spree and you will be all done for your additions. Hope this helps.

Have Fun & Keep on Truckin'

I've dealt with Mike Troyer a couple times, so I'll be a threepeat customer of his. He's pushing the Magnaflow option pretty hard, and I know the chip will make some improvement--just hoping the two together will make enough of a difference to make me happy that I spent the money.

The '91 F-150 has no electronic tranny control--I'll have to go to a shift kit to firm up the shifts.

Thanks, and I guess I'll post once the installs are made.

Latest guidance is to go with a DynoMax SuperTurbo muffler. Mike Troyer tells me it is the best choice for improving torque (for towing.) Other options might make torque suffer.

Anyone have any experience with these setups? We'd thought about doing a true dual exhaust... sounds like the DynoMax will give the same level of improvement at half the price.

exhaust

I put on headers, a bassani catless y-pipe 3" hi flow cat
3" pipe into a 40series dual ouput flowmaster and my 302 came
unglued. The catless y-pipe made the difference.I see no need
for a pre-cat, it's a power robber.I am going with a chip, different
throttle body, K&N filter charger, under drive pullies, electric fan etc.
