Unhappy Whacky Oil Guage

Here is one I haven't seen on the boards yet. I have a '91 F-150 5.0/automatic 2wd XLT Lariat w/145,000 miles. Every so often my oil gauage will drop from its normal location (between A and L)down to the bottom end of the guage. Then after a while it will rise a little or all the way back up. Some times it will jiggle up and down for a while before returning to its normal location. I've replaced the sending unit, checked the wiring and cleaned the contacts on the gauge were it is pushed into the instrument cluster. I've even hooked up a mechanical gauge for a week and found that the oil pressure is 35 at idle and 54 at any rpm above 1000.

Does anybody have any ideas? I'm thinking its either the gauge or the resistor on the instrument cluster but I don't want to buy a new gauge from Ford to find out its somthing else. Thanks in advance.

Oil gauge

I would go with the gauge since you checked the obvious
already.Thats why I prefer a mechanical guage since they
rarely fail and give an accurate reading.

karnage,

You're probably right. I was hoping to avoid buying the guage. They can't be cheap.
