owe without a doubt the 300 is the best engine that ford ever put in that truck. yes the 351 is definitely a pig on gas , trust me. i get gas every day and a half. about 125 miles to the tank but she needs a tune up and a overhaul and i need to rebuild the engine and trans. but i would take the 351 over a 302 any day of the week. same problems though with the rear main seal. the injecters getting clogged. gotta go see ya's. curt

Just had to give my $0.02. My 302 has 93,000 miles on it and still runs as well or better than it did when I bought the truck at 66,000 miles. Uses no oil day-to-day, but did use half a quart between NM and GA pulling a 3500 pound horse trailer out of OD at 70mph.

I've always been told the 302 is one of Ford's most reliable, durable engines. Can't knock mine (knock on wood...)

ON EDIT: I use my '91 with the 302 to pull a 3-horse gooseneck with no problems. About 6500 pounds, loaded. Out of OD at 70 without sweat except on some hills. I think the 302 will be adequate for your needs.

new truck

I finally got another truck. I'm a previous owner of a 95 5.0 4x4 and I just purchased a 94 5.8l a/t short bed / reg cab 4x4. I looked all over and this was the only 5.8l available in a reg cab. I have a boat and really wanted the extra low-end grunt of the 5.8l. I found 2 sc w/5.8l but they were ratted out. I picked up this truck for $9000. It's a bone stock xlt w/84k miles. It feels like it has the 3.55 ls axle like my 95 did. The tag is on the pumpkin, I just haven't cleaned it off to verify it yet. According to carfax it was originally sold in Alabama and made it's way to Virginia. It's the cleanest truck I've seen for the age on it. No hint of rust anywhere on the truck. The frame looks brand new and the engine is perfect. My northern Jeep had corroded brackets, etc in the engine compartment from spending a few winters in PA. I'm looking forward to fixing it up a little for some more power although I can tell it's much stronger than my old 5.0.

What does everyone think about the price. It seemed fair according to edmunds, nada, etc.

See attached pic if I did it right.

Nice truck drm7...

You're lucky to have found an F-150, 4x4, short bed, reg. cab 351 in such great condition! I thought I was lucky to find my truck-- a '90 F-150 4x4, short bed, reg. cab, 4.10 lsd, lariat trim level with relatively low miles (it had 79k 2.5 years ago, not too bad for a 9 year old truck), but the downsides were the 302 engine and the poor paint. I have since painted the truck and plan to swap a 351 in a few years after I get some more use out of the new 302 I had put in there only a year and a half ago. Any ways, you've got yourself a sweet truck and I hope you enjoy it as much as I am enjoying mine

P.S. Regarding the price, I would put down $9000 for that truck and not think twice about it. I paid $7700 for my truck, but it was about a year and a half older, with the smaller engine, and the paint was in poor condition-- the biggest factor of all. So I think you definitely got a good deal.
