Problems starting my '88 4.9L
Problems starting my '88 4.9L
As of last Sunday, my truck has started acting kinda strange.
I was driving around up in the woods (hunting season) and I stalled my truck while turning it around. I went to start it back up, but when I turned the key nothing happened. All the accesories turned on (stereo, heater, all the dash lights, etc.), but the motor didn't turn over. So I turned the key completely off, turned it again, and the truck started.
Its been doing this ever since then. I turn the key, nothing happens. Turn it all the way off, turn it again, and it starts. Sometimes I have to turn it off and on a few times before it will start.
Any ideas?

Sounds like a problem with the clutch pedal switch or the ignition switch. Next time this happens, keep the key in the start position, and pump the clutch pedal. If it starts to start, replace the clutch pedal switch.

Well, here's an update.
The other night I went to start my truck, and absolutely nothing happened. The starter didn't turn, no accesories came on, nothing. Just like the battery was stone dead. So I got out, pulled another rig around and hooked my jumpers up. Went to start it, again nothing. Ah-ha! Loose battery connection maybe? Yup. Cleaned up the terminals, put the cables back on, and the truck started.
I'm wondering though.......you'd think if a bad battery connection was the culprit, why would the stereo and heater be able to run, but the truck wouldn't start?
I've tried holding the key in the start position and pumping the clutch pedal in and out, to no avail.

Don't hold me to it, but I would guess it's $25 or less. Your best price will be found at www.fordpartsonline.com .

I had the same problem with my 93 F-150.It would start
sometimes and sometimes not.I checked battery cables
starter, solenoid etc.I bought a new solenoid that mounts
on the starter and still the same problem. The parts store
said it was a bad stater.Well I didn't buy it being a mechanic
for fordI tore down the starter and found a loose stripped bolt that connects one of the brushes.I installed a new bolt and have never had a problem since and that was 8 years ago.Always check the basics. You can check the starter off the truck with simple jumper cables.Hope this helps.
