What do you mean they kick in when not trying to stop hard? What happens?

Take care,

I think my 96 does the same thing. Mine, at least, only seems to happen when the truck is cold. When applying the brakes even lightly, they want to first, lock up, then release(presumably from the ABS). Makes for a rean PIA. After the trucks been driven for even a couple blocks, all is well.

Try and replace the brake cylinder. They get rust in them and do not funtion right. They hang up. I replace them evey time I do a brake job and also replace the springs.

Hope this helps

They should not operate any differently hot or cold since all it does it watch how fast your wheels are turning. IF you are having problems it should light the abs light, otherwise it is operating normally. You could pull the abs fuse and you would have a normal braking system like for off roading. I don't recommend doing this on the road since your truck knows how to stop better than you no matter how good of a driver you think you are.
