putting diesel in a 1996-older 150??

i have a 1996 150 sb xcab 4wd 5spd 5.0 liter.

i want to put a diesel in it.

i do not tow or haul anything.

candidates are ford 7.3, dd466, dd6v56 or cat3208.

i think the ford 7.3 would be the easiest simply because it would most readily adapt to my application.

assuming i can find a complete engine, transmission, heavier springs and radiator what else will i need to buy or modify?

looks like it will fit but are mounts and crossmembers different?

will my transfer case bolt up to diesel stick or auto?

as for the extra weight, i've seen 150's with bull bars, winches and plows hanging off the very front. I'm sure that my axles will cope with an extra 2-300 pounds. I will put in either 2" lift coils or airbags to keep the front up.

I would go with the 7.3L. It would be pretty a major project. You would need to change motor mounts and transmission mounts but that's no biggee. The transfer case probably won't directly bolt on but you might be able to find an adapter. You will also need to change the fuel filler cap assembly (diesel fuel nozzles won't fit into the fuel filler hole on a gas truck), probably a new fuel pump, computer, exhaust system, cooling system, and you would need to wire in the glow plugs to the ignition switch. Also you would need some new gauges inside, with a diesel you probably want to know your actual oil pressure, engine temp, etc.

As for the weight your truck will handle it just fine without suspension mods. Your truck is probably built to handle a 460 and still be able to mount up a plow. So unless you start bolting stuff on to your front bumper you will be fine. But like i said a new engine and tranny is a major mod. If you like your truck and the frame is solid i say go for it. But if the truck is beat up i would say just go out and buy a truck with a diesel.

I dont fully agree about the suspension thing. A diesel engine, especially the 7.3 is going to add a considerable amount of weight to your front end. At the very least, get overload springs/airbags and some improved shocks. By doing this, you're going to be saving your ride quality and truck in the long run.
