I’m installing a Comp Cam CL34-227-4 High Energy with hydraulic flat tappet lifters. Summit specs say that aftermarket valve springs are required for optimal performance, but many people I know as well as some reviews say that the stock springs worked for them. I’m wondering whether or not I actually need to get the new springs or not, and if I do, will I need to buy spring retainers as well. It’s a 1991 F250 460 4 speed automatic w/ OD. Stock heads and intake and bore specs. Any help is appreciated.
IMHO, 1. Always install the cam mfg's kit with their cam. 2. Avoid Comp Cams like the plague...... I don't care what component you are looking at they have decades of cyclic poor quality control ranging from rockwell hardness to product meeting the "specs".... now that they are part of a corporate investment group, the mass production "push it out the door" foundation will not doubt be pushed or continued... IMHO. Here's just a small sampling from a variety of engines/applications....Valvetrain Failure:
Considering the cam has such critical importance to the engines performance and life, to me it makes sense to use a cam grinder who will talk with you directly- even modify the cam grind to fit your needs even better and to address the possibility of cam lobe failure with the new oils. With regards to price...the difference is nil- especially considering its cheap insurance to know exactly who is machining such a critical part for your engine. And remember, advertised lift/duration/lobe separation is just that- advertizsd and not the specific grind including ramp profile that is used on the cam.
That is why I highly recommend Iskenderian & Crower & Chet Herbert, Howard & Lunati...all are family owned, been grinding cams for decades (40+ years in many instances), and will even re-grind your oem cam if possible- saving you even more $.
