Stuck in first gear after shifter kit install...
Hi All,
1993 4x4 4.9 I6
I have the 5-speed manual trans. The shifting was sloppy, so I decided to install a shifter kit that replaces the bushings around the shifter ball socket and the pins.
The install seemed to go fine but after re-assembly, the trans does not shift. I am stuck in first gear. I guess I should have ensured the trans was in neutral before removing the shifter ball stubb (?) - I don't think it was... maybe I put the shifter back in the wrong position?
It is definitely in first gear -started the truck and it will move forward, but not shift.
I tried putting the shifter back in various positions but nothing worked.
Looking for help or ideas!
Ernst

I have not personally opened the top of a M5OD R2 , but other kinds of floor shift I have seen , it is pretty obvious when the transmission is in some gear or in neutral. in neutral the shift gates are lined up so the "ball stub" can traverse between the shift positions. With that said, you are probably gonna to have to open it back up and put it in neutral or re-install the shifter in the 1st gear position. logic says that should cure the problem. Good luck.

I strongly suspect the shifter stub is not sitting in the trans right. Or something moved while the stub was out. I moved the 4x4 shifter while the stub was out as it was in the way of trying to punch out one of the guide pins. Maybe that affected the trans position?
Someone suggested using a big screwdriver to put each gear in the neutral position...let me know if that makes any sense? Or how one would do that.
I don't want to screw it up worse.

Okay, a simple job made difficult! But I finally got it to work. The trick was getting the trans back into neutral. Large screwdriver, depress the clutch and pull u-shaped cog down so that the shifter shaft can install between the two spring-loaded buttons. I imagine it would be a similar solution for the different gears.
The simpler solution would have been to have the trans in neutral BEFORE you take the stub out!.
The kit makes a huge difference. It's like a new transmission!
