sometimes the fault is obvious even to me
Check out this reasonably obvious reason for a CE light from a DPFE sensor fault.

No. I don't know but it appears that the tubes melted off the bottom of it and hot exhaust melted it's way through it. Might have been a inferior Kung Flu made part.

I wish that was it instead of maybe the sampling lines turning into a plasma cutter, lol

You used to be able to buy metal DPFE's. Now they are all plastic. I believe the OEM on yours was in fact metal, it must have been replaced before.

It was, and you can find the replacements from $10 TO $80, and they are all probably the same plastic crap.

Bob, you have a 1996, right? Most Fords from 1996 to 2004 used the same DPFE, most engines. Hit the junkyards and see if you can find a metal one.
