Spare tire bolt for 1996 F150
Spare tire bolt for 1996 F150
I have a 1996 F150 XL which I have owned since new and kept in top condition. The spare tire is located under the vehicle at the rear. I recently noticed the spare tire bolt in the center is missing. The bracket seems to be holding the wheel securely in place. Is it OK to continue to drive like that until I can get it fixed? Is there any danger of the spare wheel falling off?

I took the truck to the garage to ask a mechanic his opinion about the spare tire carrier. He said the wheel is completely secure and safe. The bolt in the centre holds the wheel in place when it is removed or installed while the retaining bracket is put in place. The retaining bracket is secured by long threaded rods at each end. The garage is unable to order the bolt as Ford discontinued it. I will try to get a replacement bolt from a wreckers in the near future.
A piece of 7/16 or 1/2 inch all thread rod and a couple self locking nuts and a torch to heat and bend, coupled with a fertile imagination could work wonders as a temporary safety device.
