Advance the timing, get a cam, rework the head, do a MAF conversion, regear it.

Advancing the timing is the only thing that doesn't cost anything.

Maintenance. My '95 4.9L has about a million miles (literally) without a rebuild or any mods, and it runs like-new. It'll also push my 3-ton Bronco into a 3-digit speeding ticket whenever I feel the need. If yours feels weak, it probably just needs YOU to do what Ford recommended. If you don't still have the maintenance schedule, buy a Haynes manual, read it cover-to-cover at least once, and then start doing all the things the truck needs.

If you try to mess with it, you'll probably be selling it soon, for less than it's worth now.

Post the code under the AXLE block on your door jam sticker.
