Is it worth it?

My father-in-law has a 93 F150 they bought new. It has the 300 in it, Black, regular cab, automatic, short bed, 2WD, 197,000 miles, and in very good shape. He is trying to sell it and offered it to me for $1200. The only reason I’d buy is to restore it and put some lightning parts on it. So my question is would most lightning parts bolt directly on a regular F150? And my second question is, is this really worth the trouble? I have always wanted an older truck to fix up but I just don’t know if this is a compete waste of my time. And I really wouldn’t blow just a huge load of money on it. Just a few parts like the bumper and wheels and the usual resto stuff, and maybe giving it a paint job eventually. Anyways any help would be great! Thanks guys

"Worth it" is kinda subjective... Are you wanting to do it to hope to sell it for more than you put into it?

"Worth it" can also mean, you wan to bring this truck back to where you remember it growing up or whatever..

Not sure what "Lightning" parts you are thinking of? Wheels, tires, sure.. Are you wanting to drop the Lightning 351 C engine in there too?

My Dad has recently put a lot of money in his 1971 F250 that he's owned since 1971 and I grew up with that truck and helped with all the maintenance and even an engine swap back in the day.

He's never going to sell it, and I suspect it'll be mine at some point, but it'll never bring the $$ that he had to put into it to bring it back. New 390 engine (3rd one), paint, interior, etc..

But, in the end, it's still the same truck we had when I was a kid, so that means a lot more now than anything..

Good luck!

Mitch

I am not wanting to fix it up to resell it. I just want an older truck to fix up to show off. It’s not a family truck for me, but my wife’s grandparents bought it new, and my wife actually drove it to high school for a little while. She doesn’t care anything about it, but I’m sure she will someday, maybe.
By lightning parts I mean the front bumper since I think it’s a little different and any other exterior body parts. I would also like the suspension to be similar to a lightning so it would sit lower like a lightning does. A motor may be in the future but it’ll be a few years down the road. I hear these 300 straight 6 motors last forever so I’m not in a big hurry to slap a new one in, even though I would love to have 450 horses in there.

Also, nice truck! I love all the old ford trucks. They were so rugged and original.

I would think you could fit the Lightning parts on a regular F150 without much problem. I do like that era of trucks too. Here is just a pic I harvested off the interweb, so if you could get your old truck to look like this, even with the 300 six in it, it would still be pretty cool!

That is a great look. Just don’t go cheesy and put Lightning badges on it. It will be about as far from a Lightning as you can get, but can still look good.
