I put a new starter and relay on my 96 F-150 4.9 5 speed. It starts but makes odd noise and doesn,t want to go when i put in gear.

 

Sounds like you have a flywheel/clutch problem.

 

If they gave you a starter meant for an automatic transmission that would explain the noise. That is a somewhat common problem with this vintage of Ford trucks. ie the common problem is a starter meant for an automatic transmission is installed in a manual transmission truck. The automatic transmission starters have a different nose that goes in by the flywheel.
