Gas Tank Replacement Steel or Poly?

Unfortunately I need to replace one of my gas tanks. Any advantage to switching to the Poly tank or am I better just keeping to the steel one?

Thanks,
Dan

The poly won't rust. Most new fuel tanks these days are plastic I think.

Plastic gas tanks are not just plastic. They have a layered permeability layering process that can cause leakage issues if not done right. I would avoid any cheap plastic tanks. I'd be looking for a Ford 7 layer HDPE tanks or better. They won't be cheap. Ford spent 110 million on plastic tanks and research. The newer Explorers are now back to steel.....hint, hint. You also have the safety issue in a fire. The plastic tanks will sag when hot and eventually melt, steel does not. I'd be looking for a Hot Dipped Tin steel tank especially if they use salt on the roads where you live. They also make stainless steel tanks that are great in a salt environment but they're pricey.
