1988 4X4 Transfer Problem

Looking for a little direction.

I have a 1988 Ford F150 XLT 4X4 that the shifter is stuck in High 4wd. I have not fooled around with it yet but looking for input on the transfer case problem. Does this transfer case have an electrical lockout or could this be mechanical? And does anyone have any input that might help me along on this.

This is not my truck but belongs to a buddy of mine and I am trying to help him.

Park the truck on a level spot and put the transmission in neutral to take the pressure off the drivetrain. Crawl under the truck at look at the linkage between the shift lever and the transfer case. Unhook the linkage and see if you can then shift the transfer case. The linkage may just be jammed if you're lucky.
