I want to tune up my 93 F150 4.9 and was hoping to get some recommendations for a quality set of spark plugs and wires.

It's just a stock truck with no performance parts except a new FIPK, but I would like to install the best plugs, wires, and cap etc to get the best performance/mileage possible.

Any suggestions / recommendations are appreciated.

My recommendations are pretty simple. I make them from personal experience. Buy a set of Champion Truck Plugs. They cost twice as much, but are by far the best plugs I've used in my truck. The cap and rotor brand aren't important, as long as they have brass contacts. Again, this will cost a couple bucks more, but is well worth it. As far as plug wires, a OEM set from Ford is your best bet. What ever you decide, avoid at all costs any platinum spark plugs and any Accel Street Stock plug wires. The wires are junk and the platinum plugs can't ever be regapped.

Why cant platinum plugs ever be regapped? Personally I would have to recommend platinum plugs. You wont gain any performance,but they last a LONG time. Most new cars are coming from the factory with platinum plugs. That is why these new cars can go 100,000 miles without a tuneup.

Personally, I've gotten real good service and performance for less than $50 on my 90 F150 with 4.9 I6 using sidegapped autolite plugs, and Accel performance dist. cap and a set of Crane Fireball wires. Cap and wires were less than $50 and the plugs cost all of about .99 apiece. Can't remember where I got the cap and wires, was either carparts.com or wrenchhead.com.

The platinum electrodes become very fragile from heat after they have been used for as little as a month. The fact they become fragile, combined with how thin they are in the first place, makes regapping them often end with damaging their tips. If you just want to put them in and leave them be, platinum plugs will be fine. That is why they use them for long term maintenance contracts, because they know they won't be removing them. If they removed them, they would have to replace them. Personally, I check my plugs every 6 months, and re gapping is usually necessary.

BTW, I don't care what the manufacturer tells you, there is not a car on the road with 50k miles that wouldn't gain significant improvements having a tune up. This whole 100k concept is already confusing people into believing that they don't need to change their oil for 100k, either.
